Špirko Hat-Trick Ends Skalica's Playoff Drought in Breathless 5-4 Win Over Humenné
Špirko hat-trick fires Skalica to their first playoff win, defeating HC 19 Humenné 5-4 in round 5 of the Tipsport Liga relegation playoff.
Špirko Hat-Trick Ends Skalica's Playoff Drought in Breathless 5-4 Win Over Humenné
HK Skalica claimed their first victory of the Tipsport Liga relegation playoff with a dramatic 5-4 home success against HC 19 Humenné on April 7, 2026, former Slovak international Rastislav Špirko delivering a match-winning hat-trick in front of 1,289 supporters.
A Slow Start — Humenné Take Control
Skalica arrived in this fifth round without a single win in the baráž, their tournament survival chances hanging by a thread. Humenné were in scarcely better shape, but they showed the composure of the two sides as the game unfolded.
Špirko gave the home fans an early lift, netting in the 8th minute to open the scoring, but Humenné hit back decisively. Peter Linet levelled at 15:00 with assists from Lušňák and Žitný, and Ľuboslav Krajňák added a second for the visitors three minutes later to flip the contest on its head. Skalica ended the first period trailing 1-2, their defensive frailties once again on show.
Second-Period Fireworks — Skalica Storm Back
The second stanza produced the most breathtaking hockey of the night. Špirko struck again at 28:00 to draw Skalica level, and within barely a minute, Lukáš Nemec collected a pass from Škápik to make it 3-2 — the hosts' first lead of the night.
Humenné refused to fold. Vladimír Šachvorostov levelled immediately at 29:00 with a solo effort to make it 3-3, and suddenly the game was anyone's. The teams went into the final intermission deadlocked, the result — and potentially the season's fortunes — delicately balanced.
Špirko Completes the Hat-Trick — Skalica Seal It
The third period belonged to Skalica and, above all, to Špirko. The veteran forward completed his hat-trick at 42:00 — assisted by Sačkov and Novajovský — to restore Skalica's lead for good. Roman Jurák extended the advantage to 5-3 at 52:00, converting a chance set up by Kuba and Janík to effectively put the match beyond doubt.
Filip Vaško did pull one back for Humenné at 58:00, but the late consolation only confirmed what the scoreline read: a 5-4 home win for Skalica, their breakthrough moment in a difficult playoff campaign.
What It Means
The victory moved Skalica to 5 points in the four-team baráž standings, still a significant distance behind Trenčín (12 points) and leaders Prešov (15 points), but providing a platform to build on with seven rounds remaining. For Humenné, defeat left them bottom on 4 points, making survival in the top flight increasingly difficult.
The Tipsport Liga baráž format is unforgiving — only the top two sides stay up — meaning both clubs remain in a high-pressure fight with every remaining game critical to their top-flight futures.
