Howden's Double-OT Winner Pushes Mammoth to the Brink
The Vegas Golden Knights took control of the Western Conference First Round with one of the wildest games of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, defeating the Utah Mammoth 5-4 in double overtime at T-Mobile Arena. Brett Howden's short-handed wrist shot at 5:28 of 2OT capped a night defined by Pavel Dorofeyev's hat trick and put Vegas one win from the second round.

Marino Strikes First, Utah Pushes Back
Utah set the tone late in the first period with John Marino opening the scoring from the back end. The Mammoth's structured forecheck kept {{homeTeam}} pinned for stretches of the opener, and Marino's strike — assisted by Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz — gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with 2:21 to play in the period.
Dorofeyev and Theodore Flip the Game
Dorofeyev answered eight seconds before the first intermission, finishing a feed from Tomas Hertl and Jack Eichel to send the teams to the room tied 1-1. The Russian winger struck again midway through the second, and Shea Theodore added a goal of his own at 17:48 to put Vegas ahead 3-2.
Crouse and Carcone Drag Utah Back In
Lawson Crouse evened it at 30:42 of the second before Dylan Guenther restored Utah's lead at 45:55 of the third. Michael Carcone authored the moment that nearly stole the game, finishing a 2-on-1 rush with a one-timer at 52:42 to give {{awayTeam}} a 4-3 cushion.
Dorofeyev Hat Trick Forces OT
With the goalie pulled, Dorofeyev completed his hat trick on the 6-on-5 with 53 seconds left in regulation — the sixth playoff hat trick in {{homeTeam}} history — to send a delirious T-Mobile Arena crowd into overtime.
Howden Ends It in Double Overtime
The first overtime was a scoreless test of nerve. In 2OT Reilly Smith was sent off for high-sticking at 3:42, leaving Vegas shorthanded — and inviting the unlikeliest of heroes. At 5:28 Howden won a puck battle in the right circle off a Mitch Marner play, ripped a wrist shot past Karel Vejmelka, and ended a marathon that ran past midnight in Las Vegas.
What It Means
{{homeTeam}} now lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 and head to Salt Lake City for Game 6 with the chance to close out the round. Utah, in its first playoff run under the Mammoth identity, faces elimination but has already shown it can win at Delta Center. With back-to-back overtime games — Game 4 also went to OT — neither side has had to find another gear yet, and they will need to.
