Dukla Trencin vs Skalica: Final Baráž Showdown — Trenčín's Survival on the Line
The curtain falls on the 2025/26 Slovak Tipsport Liga baráž on April 25 as Dukla Trenčín welcome Skalica in the competition's decisive final round. For both clubs this is a match that carries the weight of an entire season — and potentially the weight of their top-flight futures.
The Baráž Context
After finishing 11th in the regular season, Dukla Trenčín were condemned to the relegation round alongside Prešov, Skalica, and HC 19 Humenné. The format is simple and brutal: after a nine-round single round-robin, only the top two clubs survive in the Tipsport Liga. The bottom two drop to the second-tier Slovenská hokejová liga.
Trenčín have managed to keep themselves in the promotion places for most of the campaign. Their early form was impressive — they did not lose a game in regulation in the first four rounds — but cracks appeared in round 5 when Prešov handed them a 3:1 defeat to take the lead in the standings. A near-miss in round 6, where Skalica equalised late and snatched a 6:5 overtime victory, cost Trenčín two points they could not afford to give away.
Heading into the final round Trenčín are in 2nd place, but the gap to Skalica in 3rd is still manageable. For Trenčín, a point at home should be enough to stay up. For Skalica, only a regulation victory will realistically keep their survival hopes alive.
Trenčín: A Team Built on Individual Brilliance
Dukla Trenčín's season has been a story of imported firepower carrying a squad with structural weaknesses. Jaedon Descheneau (21 goals, 28 assists in 45 regular-season games) and Phil Varone (13 goals, 36 assists in 45 games) are as threatening as any forward pairing in the league. Jordy Bellerive adds a further 23 goals to the equation.
In the baráž, Descheneau proved his big-game credentials by scoring twice in injury time to rescue a 4:2 win over Skalica in round 3. He will be the man Skalica's defence must track above all others on April 25.
Skalica: The Underdogs With an OT Pedigree
Skalica came into the baráž as the lowest-ranked survivors, and their early rounds reflected that — winless through the first four games. But the team under Andrej Výboh gradually found rhythm. A 5:4 home win over Humenné in round 5 gave them belief, and a stunning 6:5 overtime victory over Trenčín in round 6 — with Lukáš Kuba delivering the OT winner — proved they are capable of the spectacular on the right night.
The challenge now is to replicate that performance under even greater pressure, on the road, in a match where only a full three-point regulation win will likely be sufficient.
What It Means
The April 25 match is effectively a play-in final for one of the two survival spots. Trenčín's home advantage, their superior goal difference, and the quality of their forward line make them clear favourites. But Skalica have already shown in this very baráž that they can beat Trenčín — and in hockey, one power play, one inspired goaltender, or one moment of individual brilliance can change everything.
If Trenčín win, they almost certainly stay up. If Skalica win in regulation and results elsewhere go their way, the dream of top-flight survival lives on for another 12 months. A draw or OT result, and mathematics could still produce a dramatic outcome either way.
With both clubs fighting for their identity as Tipsport Liga teams, expect a fierce, high-intensity clash at Trenčín on April 25.
