Aalborg Pirates hold off Frederikshavn White Hawks comeback in 4-3 season opener
Aalborg Pirates held off a Frederikshavn White Hawks comeback to win 4-3 in the Metal Ligaen season opener. Casey Dornbach scored twice on his debut in front of 2,043 fans at Nordjyske Bank Arena.

Aalborg Pirates seized the first north Jutland derby of the Metal Ligaen season on Friday night, holding off a spirited Frederikshavn White Hawks fightback to win 4-3 in front of 2,043 spectators at Nordjyske Bank Arena.
Casey Dornbach scored twice on his debut after receiving his work and residency permit in time, and Andreas Grundtvig added a goal and an assist as the visitors built a 3-0 lead midway through the second period before Frederikshavn stormed back.
How it unfolded
Aalborg dominated the opening frame. Andreas Grundtvig opened the scoring at 08:16, converting a feed from Tobias Ladehoff and Oskar Kvist. Lucas Andersen doubled the lead four minutes later at 12:09, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Casey Dornbach — one of three north American imports Aalborg had been awaiting paperwork for — made it 3-0 at 29:27 in the second period, assisted by Grundtvig and Darien Craighead.
Frederikshavn responded swiftly. Jesper Olesen pulled one back at 31:36 from Albert Schioldan and Frank Gymer, and Aleksi Halme cut the deficit to 3-2 at 38:30. The hosts carried that momentum into the second intermission.
But Dornbach struck again at 45:33, restoring Aalborg's two-goal cushion with his second of the night, again set up by Craighead. Christopher Rubenach replied for Frederikshavn just 53 seconds later at 46:26, making it 4-3, but the home side could not find an equaliser in the final 13 minutes.
The turning point
Dornbach's second goal at 45:33 — just 23 seconds after a face-off win in the offensive zone — proved decisive. Frederikshavn had all the momentum, having scored twice in the second period, but the American import's quick strike reset the scoreboard and forced the hosts to chase again.
Key performers
Casey Dornbach (Aalborg Pirates) — Two goals on debut, both from close-range finishes after strong cycles from the Grundtvig-Craighead line. The Harvard product justified why Aalborg expedited his paperwork.
Aleksi Halme (Frederikshavn White Hawks) — One goal and one assist, a constant threat on the forecheck. One of four Finnish forwards in Frederikshavn's new-look lineup, he looked the most dangerous home attacker.
Andreas Grundtvig (Aalborg Pirates) — A goal and an assist, and the primary engine on Aalborg's most productive forward line. His chemistry with Dornbach and Craighead was immediate.
Jesper Olesen (Frederikshavn White Hawks) — Scored the crucial 1-3 goal that ignited the comeback and set up Rubenach's late strike.
By the numbers — interpreted
The 0-2 first-period deficit told the story: Frederikshavn's new-look roster under first-year head coach Casper Stockfisch took time to settle against a structured Aalborg side. The White Hawks improved markedly after the first intermission, outscoring the Pirates 2-1 in the second period and generating sustained offensive zone time. But conceding Dornbach's second goal within a minute of Rubenach's reply prevented the home side from truly applying scoreboard pressure in the final period.
What it means
Aalborg Pirates start the season with two points on the road in a derby — always the desired outcome. For Frederikshavn, the comeback showed character after missing the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, but defensive lapses in the opening 30 minutes proved costly.
Frederikshavn White Hawks host Sønderjyske on Sunday 30 August at 15:00. Aalborg Pirates return home to face Herning Blue Fox on Saturday 29 August.
Verdict
Aalborg's early efficiency and Dornbach's clinical finishing decided a game Frederikshavn grew into but could not fully turn. For a betting lens: the Pirates' ability to score three goals before the 30-minute mark against a team implementing a new system was the match-defining margin.
