Sweden — Baseball

Sweden has a small but active Baseball community, with 1 leagues and 11 teams competing in the country. The Elitserien (Elite Series) serves as the top domestic league, and baseball has a dedicated following, particularly in Stockholm and Gothenburg. The sport has grown gradually since its organised introduction in the 1960s.

Baseball arrived in Sweden in the late 1950s, introduced through American cultural influence and expatriate communities. The Swedish Baseball and Softball Federation was established in 1961, and the sport has developed through a dedicated network of clubs, primarily in the larger cities. While baseball remains a niche pursuit in Sweden, it has maintained a consistent presence and regularly competes in European competition.

The Svenska Baseboll och Softboll Förbundet governs Baseball in Sweden, managing the domestic league system and national team programme. The SBSF is a member of the WBSC and the Confederation of European Baseball.

The Swedish Baseball league system features the Elitserien as the top division, with a small number of clubs competing during the summer months. The season runs from May to September, with playoffs determining the Swedish champion. Lower divisions provide development opportunities for newer clubs and younger players.

The Stockholm Monarchs have been one of the prominent clubs in Swedish Baseball, competing in the Elitserien. Other notable clubs include the Gothenburg Sharks and Sundbyberg Heat. Swedish baseball clubs operate at an amateur level and rely on volunteer support and community engagement to sustain their programmes.

Sweden has participated in the European Baseball Championship at lower pool levels and fields a competitive national team within the Scandinavian baseball landscape. While Sweden has not yet broken into the top tier of European baseball, the national team programme supports the sport's development and provides international competitive experience.
