Fubon Guardians vs Wei Chuan Dragons

Wei Chuan struck first in the opening frame. Liu Chi-hung singled, moved to second on a Chang Cheng-yu walk, and scored on a Chu Yu-hsien single to make it 1-0.

Fubon answered immediately in the bottom of the first. Yeh Tzu-ting walked and advanced to third on a Lin Tse-pin single before Chang Yu-cheng lifted a sacrifice fly to centre field, tying the game 1-1.

That 1-1 deadlock held for the next eight innings.

Drew Gagnon (鋼龍) was outstanding for the Dragons, working seven innings on 102 pitches. He allowed just three hits and one earned run while walking three and striking out four. His counterpart Han Rio (悍里歐) matched him pitch for pitch in his first CPBL outing: six innings, five hits, one earned run, six strikeouts and four walks over 99 pitches.

Both bullpens kept the zeros coming. Lu Wei-cheng and Lin Kai-wei each pitched a scoreless frame for the Dragons while Chang Jui-lin and Chang Yi did the same for Fubon, sending the game to extras.

In the top of the 10th, with Liu Chun-hao starting as the free runner on second — inserted via the international tiebreaker rule — Liu Chi-hung greeted Fubon reliever Tseng Chun-yueh with a single, putting runners on the corners. After a strikeout and a pop-out, Chu Yu-hsien delivered his third hit of the game, a two-out single that scored Chang Yu-chia (pinch-running for Liu Chun-hao). Li Kai-wei followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1.

Tseng (1.2 IP, 3H, 2R, 1ER, 2K) took the loss, his first of the season.

Chu Yu-hsien (朱育賢), Wei Chuan — Player of the Match: The veteran first baseman went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, including the go-ahead knock in the 10th. His three-hit performance matched a season high.

Drew Gagnon, Wei Chuan: The Dragons' ace lowered his ERA to 2.17 with seven innings of three-hit ball. He has now logged at least six innings in seven of his last nine starts.

Han Rio (悍里歐), Fubon: The new Fubon import made a strong first impression in CPBL, holding the Dragons to one run across six innings with six strikeouts. He did not factor in the decision.

Fan Kuo-chen (范國宸), Fubon: Reached base three times with two hits and a walk in four plate appearances, the only Guardian with a multi-hit game.

MVP honours went to Wei Chuan centre fielder Kuo Tien-hsin (郭天信), who went 0-for-5 at the plate but made several running catches in the outfield to keep the Guardians off the bases.

Wei Chuan out-hit Fubon 9-5 and drew four walks against four for the home side, but the most telling number is timing: the Dragons collected three of their nine hits and both of their extra-inning runs with two outs in the 10th. Fubon, by contrast, managed only one hit after the sixth inning and struck the ball on the ground 12 times — generating little lift against a Wei Chuan infield that turned two double plays.

Fubon went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position after the first inning, while Wei Chuan went 3-for-11 in that split, with all three hits coming in the first and 10th innings.

Lin Tzu-yu earned the save despite allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th, when a Wei Chuan error helped Fubon plate one run. He induced a game-ending groundout from Wang Cheng-tang with the tying run on base.

The Dragons (16-13-0) remain firmly in the upper half of the CPBL standings, now 3.5 games clear of the Guardians (12-15-0). Fubon has lost four of its last five dating back to 18 August and sits in sixth place, though still within striking distance of the middle of the pack.

Wei Chuan returns to action on Tuesday 25 August against the CTBC Brothers. Fubon gets Monday off before facing the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions on Tuesday 25 August.

A classic pitchers' duel decided by the tiebreaker rule. Gagnon and Han Rio traded zeros for the better part of seven innings, but Wei Chuan's two-out hitting in extra frames made the difference. The Guardians' inability to mount anything after the first inning — and their 0-for-7 RISP drought — will be the takeaway for Fubon as they look to regroup.
