UVV vs HCAW

HCAW opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, plating two runs off the UVV starter. A third run in the third made it 3-0 before UVV responded in the bottom half.

UVV trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fourth, but HCAW answered emphatically with a three-run fifth inning that stretched the margin to 6-2. UVV added one run in the sixth but could not close further. The HCAW bullpen held UVV scoreless over the final three innings.

The bottom of the fourth had shifted momentum toward UVV — they had cut a three-run deficit to one and looked poised to level the game. HCAW's immediate three-run response in the top of the fifth was decisive. That four-run cushion proved insurmountable for a UVV offence that had just spent its energy in the 11-run Game 1.

HCAW starting pitcher — Worked into the fifth inning and held UVV to two runs through four, setting the table for the bullpen to close out the final three scoreless frames. His ability to limit damage in the fourth prevented UVV from tying the game.

HCAW bullpen — Retired 9 of the final 12 UVV batters across the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, preserving the 6-3 lead without serious threat.

UVV offence (Game 2) — After scoring 11 runs on 12+ hits in the seven-inning opener, UVV managed only 3 runs in the nine-inning nightcap. The lineup could not replicate the production that had given them a doubleheader sweep opportunity.

Player of the Match: HCAW starting pitcher — controlled the game through four-plus innings, allowing HCAW to build and protect an early lead.

The doubleheader exposed UVV's extreme offensive volatility. Their 11 runs in Game 1 (7 innings) represented 8.2% of their entire regular-season run total of 134 in 35 games. In Game 2, they managed just 3 runs across 9 innings, closer to their regular-season average of 4.4 per game.

HCAW's regular-season run-prevention numbers (173 runs allowed in 36 games, 4.81 per game) suggested they were better than their 13-23 record indicated. Game 2 was closer to that norm; Game 1 (7 runs, 10+ hits allowed) was an outlier.

The Bottom-3 Pool now sees UVV at 2-1 and HCAW at 1-2 in the round-robin. UVV won both legs of the Thursday game in Bussum (2-0) and Game 1 on Saturday before HCAW salvaged Game 2.

UVV finished the regular season last at 5-31 (.139), the worst record in the seven-team league. HCAW placed fifth at 13-23 (.361). Both were eliminated from playoff contention before the postseason began on 20 August.

What's next: UVV host Hoofddorp Pioniers on Thursday 3 September (19:30 local), then face them in a road doubleheader on Saturday 5 September (10:00 & 12:45). HCAW travel to Hoofddorp Pioniers on Thursday 27 August (19:30), then host a doubleheader against them on Saturday 29 August (12:00 & 14:45).

HCAW earned a deserved split by showing better adjustment between games than UVV. After Game 1's slugfest, HCAW pitchers attacked UVV's hitters differently and the bullpen held firm. UVV showed brief promise but remain the team with the league's weakest run-prevention and an offence that appears once per doubleheader at best.
