Toledo Mud Hens vs Iowa Cubs

The game started poorly for the home side. Brant Hurter, making a rehab start for Toledo, lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Justin Dean led off with an infield single, Owen Ayers walked, and Chas McCormick punched a single through the middle to score Dean for a 1-0 Iowa lead. With the bases loaded, Nick Sandlin came on to escape the jam.

That early escape proved pivotal.

In the bottom of the second, the Mud Hens flipped the game entirely. Chris Meyers — playing his first game for Toledo — led off with a double. Andrew Navigato followed with a single. Bennett Lee then launched a three-run home run to left-centre, putting Toledo ahead 3-1.

The Hens kept pouring it on in the third. Max Anderson beat out an infield single, Josue Briceño walked, and Meyers delivered his second hit — a fly-ball single that scored Anderson for a 4-1 lead. Navigato later doubled to left, making it 5-1 after three innings.

Max Burt extended the lead to 6-1 in the seventh with a solo home run to left-centre, his second of the season.

Iowa briefly replied in the eighth when McCormick crushed a 405-foot solo home run off Tyler Mattison, cutting the deficit to 6-2. But Toledo answered immediately. Justice Bigbie walked, Navigato singled for his third hit of the night, Cal Stevenson walked, and Lee was hit by a pitch to force home a run. Jace Jung capped the inning with a two-run double to left, making it 9-2.

Beau Brieske closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Hurter's early exit after 0.2 innings looked like it could unravel Toledo's game plan. Instead, Sandlin's escape act — getting the final out of the first with the bases loaded — preserved the deficit at 1-0 and handed the ball to Sears. The left-hander then retired 15 consecutive batters across five hitless innings, striking out seven. The bullpen, pressed into duty from the second inning onwards, combined for 8.1 innings of two-run ball.

Sears entered with a 5.45 ERA on the season. This was his second consecutive quality start.

Andrew Navigato (Toledo) — 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Reached base in four of his five plate appearances.

Bennett Lee (Toledo) — 3-run home run in the second, his first HR as a Mud Hen, plus an RBI by being hit by a pitch in the eighth. Four RBIs on the night.

Chas McCormick (Iowa) — 2-for-4 with a single and a solo home run (405 feet). Both of Iowa's RBIs came off his bat.

The final tally of Toledo 9, Iowa 2 undersells the dominance of the middle innings. Sears' five no-hit frames meant Iowa managed just four hits all night — two of them in the first inning before Sandlin snuffed the rally, and McCormick's solo blast in the eighth accounting for half of the Cubs' hit total. Toledo out-hit Iowa 10-4, with nine different starters reaching base at least once. The Mud Hens walked five times and were hit by two pitches, reflecting a patient approach that forced Iowa starter Braxton Garrett (or the Iowa bullpen) into 55 strikes from 97 pitches.

All nine of Toledo's runs were driven in with two outs, underscoring their clutch hitting.

The Mud Hens improved to 23-23 in the second half (57-63 overall), while Iowa dropped to 18-28 in the second half (48-70). The win opens the six-game series on a positive note for Toledo.

This was a game that could have gone wrong for Toledo in the first inning — starter out, bullpen scrambling, early deficit. Instead, Sandlin and Sears turned it into a showcase of depth. Sears' five-inning no-hit outing is the headline, but Lee's debut homer and Navigato's relentless table-setting suggest the Hens' lineup is beginning to click with its new additions.
