HCAW vs UVV

UVV struck in the top of the first inning. The Utrecht side strung together hits and manufactured two runs before HCAW could record three outs, and that proved to be all the offence they would need.

UVV’s pitching staff took over from there, scattering six HCAW hits across five innings while protecting the early lead. HCAW’s pitchers settled after the rocky first, holding UVV scoreless over the remaining frames, but the Bussum lineup could not push a single run across despite outhitting the visitors 6-3.

The game was called after 4½ innings — UVV having batted in five frames and HCAW in four — with the score 2-0 and HCAW unable to mount a response in the abbreviated contest.

The first inning decided everything. UVV put runners on with disciplined at-bats and converted three hits into two runs. From that moment, UVV played with a lead for the first time in months, and the pressure rested entirely on HCAW’s hitters, who never got on the front foot.

UVV finished the regular season at 5-30, the worst record in the seven-team Hoofdklasse, and had lost 11 consecutive league matches dating back to early July. HCAW completed the regular campaign at 13-23, good for fifth place but 20 games behind leaders Curaçao Neptunus.

The head-to-head record (which covers 20 meetings since 2023, per the match page widget) showed HCAW with 19 wins and UVV none — a disparity that makes the outcome even more striking. In the regular season alone, HCAW had beaten UVV three times by a combined 33-12 (13-3, 3-2, 17-7).

UVV’s last victory before this game came on 16 April, a 12-4 home win over Hoofddorp Pioniers — 126 days earlier.

HCAW managed six hits to UVV’s three, with both sides committing one error. The difference? UVV made their hits count in the one inning that mattered.

This was the opening fixture of the Bottom-3 Poule, the consolation round contested by the 5th, 6th and 7th-placed teams (HCAW, Hoofddorp Pioniers and UVV). For UVV, the win provides a massive morale injection after a historically difficult regular season. For HCAW, it is an immediate setback in their bid to finish atop the Bottom-3 standings.

Both sides continue their Bottom-3 schedule with a doubleheader on Saturday, where they will play two further games — one of seven innings and one of nine, following the Hoofdklasse’s standard doubleheader format.

UVV produced the result of their season — a defensive masterclass against a side that had dominated them in every previous meeting. HCAW’s inability to score despite outhitting their opponents 6-3 will be the lasting concern. The Bottom-3 Poule just became a lot more interesting.
