Nippon Ham Fighters vs Fukuoka S. Hawks

Fighters manager Tsuyoshi Shinjo turned to 23-year-old right-hander Ren Fukushima in the eighth inning — the same reliever who had earned his first career win the previous day. The move backfired catastrophically.

Fukushima walked leadoff batter Masaki, then allowed a single to Ukyo Shuto and walked Kensuke Kondo on four pitches to load the bases with nobody out. On a 2-0 count to Kurihara, Fukushima left a fastball over the plate and the Hawks third baseman crushed it into the right-field stands for his Pacific League-leading 33rd home run — a game-tying grand slam.

Fukushima was replaced by Mizuki Hori without recording a single out. A Nikkan Sports report described Fukushima as dropping his head in dejection as he walked off the mound.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the final two innings. SoftBank threatened in the 10th when Shuto led off with a single and stole second off reliever Kosuke Uehara, but was stranded at third after Kondo flied out, Kurihara grounded out and Yuki Yanagita was intentionally walked before catcher Umino struck out swinging.

In the bottom of the 10th, Fighters outfielder Arismendy Castro led off with a single off Hawks reliever Ito but was left on base as Nomura struck out and the inning ended.

Kengo Kurihara (SoftBank Hawks) — Player of the Match. The third baseman went 2-for-4 with a walk and four RBIs. His eighth-inning grand slam — his NPB-leading 33rd home run — turned a certain loss into a draw in one swing.

Seiya Kiyomiya & Yuki Nomura (Nippon Ham Fighters) — The heart of the Fighters' order produced back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh inning that should have been the knockout blows. Kiyomiya finished 3-for-5 with a homer and an RBI; Nomura went 2-for-4 with a homer, a single, two RBIs and a walk.

Fukuya Yamazaki (Nippon Ham Fighters) — The left-handed starter was excellent through six innings, limiting the Hawks to three hits and one run while striking out five. He left with a 5-1 lead and a potential sixth win, only to be denied by the bullpen collapse.

Tomoya Masaki (SoftBank Hawks) — The leadoff hitter launched his 21st home run of the season in the fourth inning, sparking SoftBank's initial comeback. He finished 1-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI.

The Fighters out-hit the Hawks 10-8 but committed no errors to SoftBank's two. SoftBank's two errors kept innings alive but the Fighters could not capitalise. Fighters hitters struck out eight times against six Hawks pitchers; SoftBank whiffed 10 times against six Fighters arms.

Kurihara's grand slam was the highest-leverage moment of the afternoon, flipping a near-certain Fighters win into a tie game with a single swing. SoftBank used six pitchers — Maeda, Suzuki, Kimura, Matsumoto Yuki, Tsumori Jumpei and Ito — to cover 10 innings. Nippon Ham used six as well: Yamazaki, Sun Yilei, Fukushima, Hori, Yanagawa Hayato and Uehara.

SoftBank remain firmly atop the Pacific League at 66-39-2 (.629), 7.5 games clear of second-placed Seibu Lions. Nippon Ham sit third at 61-49-1 (.555), level on games behind with the Lions but trailing on win percentage. The draw means the Fighters missed a chance to close ground on the Hawks, having won Wednesday's encounter 8-7 in 10 innings.

With the season series standing at 15-4-1 in SoftBank's favour — the Hawks have dominated this matchup all year — Thursday's result felt like a missed statement win for Shinjo's side.

A dramatic, high-leverage NPB affair that showcased both the Fighters' power potential and their bullpen fragility in the same afternoon. Kurihara's grand slam was a reminder of why SoftBank lead the league, while Fukushima's meltdown — just one day after his first career win — highlighted the thin margin between hero and goat in a pennant race. The 5-5 draw was the only logical outcome after both sides had their chances to win and blew them.
