Chiba Lotte Marines vs Nippon Ham Fighters

Nippon Ham opened the scoring with two outs in the first. Kotaro Kiyomiya doubled down the right-field line, and Franmil Reyes lined a single to right that brought Kiyomiya home for a 1-0 lead.

The Fighters extended their lead in the third. Yuma Imagawa and Kiyomiya drew consecutive walks from Lotte starter Haruya Tanaka, and Reyes pulled a double into the right-centre gap, scoring Imagawa for a 2-0 advantage. Naoki Arizono followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Kiyomiya to make it 3-0.

Lotte halved the deficit in the fourth when Koki Yamaguchi crushed a solo home run to left — his 23rd of the season — making it 3-1.

The Marines crept closer in the seventh. Toshiya Sato launched a solo shot to right, his 13th homer of the year, cutting the lead to 3-2.

The equaliser came in the eighth against Nippon Ham's bullpen. Starter Koki Kitayama had departed after 111 pitches across seven innings. Reliever Naotaka Kanemura retired pinch-hitter Naonori Yasuda but then Kenta Chiya singled to centre, Kyota Fujiwara walked, and Shisho Nishikawa delivered a centre-field single that scored Chiya and tied the game at 3-3.

Lotte threatened again in the ninth. Ryusei Terachi led off with a double to right-centre, Ryusei Ogawa was intentionally walked, and Neftali Soto pinch-hit and walked to load the bases. But Naonori Yasuda grounded into a double play and Chiya grounded out to shortstop to end the threat.

Nippon Ham went down in order in the top of the tenth as Lotte reliever Shota Suzuki struck out the side — three strikeouts on just 10 pitches. The game was called a draw after 10 innings, as NPB regular-season games allow one extra inning.

Kitayama's exit after 111 pitches proved decisive. He had allowed only two hits — both solo homers — and appeared in control. But Kanemura (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER) could not protect the one-run lead, and Lotte's bullpen (Ono, Yokoyama, Suzuki) threw three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Koki Kitayama (Nippon Ham Fighters) — 7 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB, 111 pitches. A quality start undone by two solo homers. His season ERA stands at 2.22.

Haruya Tanaka (Chiba Lotte Marines) — 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB, 112 pitches. Settled after a rocky start and kept Lotte within striking distance.

Franmil Reyes (Nippon Ham Fighters) — 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 2B. Both of his hits drove in runs during the first three innings.

Koki Yamaguchi (Chiba Lotte Marines) — 1-for-4, HR (23rd), RBI. His fourth-inning solo homer sparked the comeback.

Player of the match: Koki Kitayama — seven quality innings in a no-decision.

Both teams finished with six hits, but Lotte's damage came via the long ball — two solo homers accounted for their first two runs. The Fighters strung together their offence early but managed only one hit after the third inning. Nippon Ham struck out 10 times — three in the tenth alone — while Lotte fanned six times. Two defensive errors by the Fighters contributed to Lotte's eighth-inning rally.

The draw leaves Nippon Ham Fighters in third place in the Pacific League (6-10-1 in the season series vs Lotte), while Lotte remain fifth. The series continues on Saturday 22 August at ZOZO Marine Stadium (10:00 JST). Lotte have named Andre Jackson as their starter; Nippon Ham will send Tatsu Kouta to the mound.

A fair result after an evenly matched contest. Kitayama was excellent but could not keep Lotte in the ballpark. The Marines showed character in erasing a three-run hole but lacked the finishing blow in extra innings. Nippon Ham's inability to generate offence after the third inning is a concern heading into Saturday.
