Yomiuri Giants vs Hiroshima Carp

The game was a pitcher's duel from the opening frame. Both Howard and Morishita retired the side in order in the first, and only Hiroshima's Shunsuke Katsuta managed a hit through the first two innings — a leadoff single in the first that was quickly erased.

Bottom 3rd — Giants strike first. Shunsuke Urata led off with a single to right. After Shunsuke Sasaki reached on a shortstop error by Atsumu Nishikawa, Yuta Izuguchi drew a walk to load the bases. Bobby Dalbec then lined a single to left, scoring Urata for a 1-0 lead. Takumi Oshiro grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning, but the damage was done.

From the fourth through the seventh, Morishita settled into a rhythm, allowing just two more hits while striking out five. Meanwhile, the Giants' bullpen took over after Howard's exit: Hotta worked a clean sixth, Akahoshi a perfect seventh (three groundouts on 13 pitches), and Tanaka struck out two in a one-hit eighth.

Bottom 8th — Insurance run. Urata singled to left to lead off, then Sasaki sacrificed him to second on a bunt. Izuguchi walked, then stole second to put two in scoring position. After Dalbec grounded out to the pitcher, Oshiro delivered the dagger — a centre-field single that scored Urata to make it 2-0.

Martinez closed it out in the ninth, allowing a leadoff single to catcher Yasuaki Mochimaru but erasing the threat on a fielder's choice and a pop-up, sealing his 33rd save of the season.

The bottom of the third was the decisive frame. Nishikawa's error at shortstop — his first of the season — extended the inning and loaded the bases for Dalbec, who delivered the game's first run. On a night when hits were at a premium (six for each side), that one extra out proved the difference.

Tyler Howard (Yomiuri Giants) — Player of the Match. The left-hander threw 73 pitches over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out four. It was his third win of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.31.

Masato Morishita (Hiroshima Carp). The right-hander deserved a better fate. He went eight innings on 125 pitches, allowing six hits but just one earned run (two total) with six strikeouts and two walks. His ERA dropped to a respectable 3.84 despite the loss.

Shunsuke Urata (Yomiuri Giants). The second baseman went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, serving as the catalyst from the leadoff spot. He reached base in both scoring innings.

Takumi Oshiro (Yomiuri Giants). The catcher drove in both Giants runs, singling to centre in the eighth for the insurance RBI after grounding out in the third. He finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.

The box score tells a tale of two offences that could not break through: both teams managed six hits, but Yomiuri cashed two of theirs while Hiroshima went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The Giants drew two walks and stole two bases (Urata, Izuguchi), while the Carp were held without an extra-base hit for the entire game. Giants pitchers combined for seven strikeouts against two walks; Hiroshima's staff — essentially Morishita alone — struck out six with two free passes.

The only error of the game (Nishikawa's miscue in the third) directly led to Yomiuri's first run, and the unearned run was the difference on Morishita's otherwise excellent line.

The win improved Yomiuri's record to 57-48-2, keeping them roughly two games behind the first-place Hanshin Tigers in the Central League race. Hiroshima, meanwhile, dropped to 40-58-4, anchored in sixth place — now 14.5 games off the pace. The Giants have won nine of their 14 head-to-head meetings with the Carp this season per the Central League divisional record.

Next up: The two sides meet again at Tokyo Dome for the second game of the series. Yomiuri then travel to face the Yakult Swallows, while Hiroshima return home to host the Chunichi Dragons.

A textbook shutout built on a starter's efficiency and a bullpen that never flinched. Yomiuri didn't need much offence — two runs on six hits was enough against a Hiroshima lineup that has struggled to score all season. If the Giants continue to get starts like Howard's and Martinez keeps slamming the door, they have the pitching to make a late-season push at Hanshin.
