Yokohama BayStars vs Hanshin Tigers

Hanshin struck first when Morishita launched a solo home run to left-centre off DeNA starter Yutaka Ishida in the top of the first — his 31st of the season. The Tigers doubled the lead in the third: Teruaki Sato ripped a double, Morishita singled, and Yusuke Oyama drove in a run with a groundout to second.

DeNA answered in the fourth. Yoshitomo Tsutsugo singled and J. Encarnacion doubled, putting runners on second and third with one out. After a walk loaded the bases, a throwing error by Hanshin starter Koki Takahashi on Shogo Katsumata's comebacker allowed Tsutsugo to score from third. The inning ended with the bases still loaded, and the unearned run cut the deficit to 2-1.

Koki Takahashi (5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 3 K) left having allowed only the unearned run, and the Hanshin bullpen took over from the sixth.

Hanshin restored the two-run cushion in the sixth. Sato led off with his second double of the night, advanced to third on Oyama's flyout, and scored on a two-out single by catcher Takahiro Fushimi, making it 3-1.

Maki pulled DeNA within one in the seventh, crushing a solo home run to left — his 22nd — off reliever Shota Oikawa. The BayStars drew level in the eighth: Katsumata walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a two-out single by Ryuki Deguchi off closer-in-waiting Atsushi Iwasaki, knotting the game at 3-3.

DeNA manager Daisuke Miura called on reliever Samuel Reynolds for the ninth. After retiring the first two batters — Motoyama singled but was stranded on a fielder's choice — a walk to Nakano and a stolen base put runners on second and third with two outs. Morishita, who had homered and singled off left-handed pitching earlier, ripped a two-run single to right-centre on a 2-2 pitch, scoring both runners. Sato followed with a single, but Oyama grounded out to end the inning.

The two runs were charged to Reynolds (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 ER), who took the loss.

Kudo closed the door in the bottom of the ninth, striking out Tsutsugo and Encarnacion and getting Miyazaki to ground out, earning his 18th save. Iwasaki (0.1 IP) was credited with the win.

Shōta Morishita (Hanshin) — 4-for-5, HR (31), 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R. The Tigers right fielder reached base four times, homered in his first at-bat, and delivered the game's biggest hit in the ninth. Player of the match.

Teruaki Sato (Hanshin) — 4-for-5, 2 2B, 1 R. Sato consistently found gaps, setting the table for the middle of the order and scoring twice.

Shūgo Maki (DeNA) — 2-for-5, 2B, HR (22), 1 RBI. The BayStars second baseman kept his team in the game with a seventh-inning solo shot that cut the lead to one.

Yoshitomo Tsutsugo (DeNA) — 3-for-5, 1 R. The veteran first baseman reached base three times and scored DeNA's first run.

DeNA out-hit Hanshin 12-11 but left 12 runners on base — a critical missed-opportunity number. The BayStars loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and managed only one unearned run, then left the bases loaded again in the sixth. Hanshin, by contrast, was 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position, with Morishita accounting for the two biggest hits of the night.

Each side used seven pitchers; the Hanshin bullpen (Takahashi → Kinoshita → Oikawa → Jingū → Yuasa → Iwasaki → Kudō) held DeNA to two earned runs over four innings while striking out two. DeNA's relievers, after Ishida's solid 5.2 IP, allowed two runs over 3.1 frames.

Hanshin (63-47-1) extended their lead atop the Central League as they chase a Climax Series spot for the second consecutive season. DeNA (50-59-3) remain third but fell to 12 games back, their postseason hopes fading with 24 games remaining.

Both teams are off Monday. Hanshin travel to Nagoya to face the Chunichi Dragons on Tuesday 25 August (18:00 JST). DeNA head to Mazda Stadium to take on the Hiroshima Carp on the same day.
