Chunichi Dragons vs Yakult Swallows

Yanagi's ability to limit the damage in the fifth. After Yakult loaded the bases with one out and had momentum, the Dragons right-hander got Miyamoto to roll over on a 1-1 grounder to second and Masuda to pop out, preserving the one-run lead. Yakult left runners on the corners, a missed opportunity that proved decisive.

Orlando Sanō (Chunichi) — Player of the Match: 1-for-4, 2-run HR (18th), 2 RBI. His fourth-inning blast was the decisive swing of the game and continued a productive series for the Dragons' lineup.

Yūya Yanagi (Chunichi): Winning pitcher (5-5). 6 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 111 pitches. Battled through traffic — Yakult put runners on base in five of his six innings — but made the big pitches when it mattered.

Shin'ya Matsuyama (Chunichi): 23rd save. Retired Santana, Uchiyama and Takeoka in order in the ninth, striking out two.

Hideki Nagaoka (Yakult): 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 double. Reached base twice and delivered the key hit in Yakult's two-run fifth.

Sōma Uchiyama (Yakult): 3-for-4. The only player on either side with a multi-hit game, but was left stranded each time.

Both teams showed remarkably similar underlying numbers: the Swallows out-hit the Dragons 9-7 and managed four extra-base hits (two doubles) to Chunichi's one (Sanō's homer). Yet the Dragons won because of sequencing efficiency — their three-run fourth came on just two hits (Sanō's homer and a single by Ishikawa), aided by a hit batter and a fielder's choice. Yakult left seven runners on base, including three in scoring position in the fifth.

Yanagi's 111 pitches over six innings (18.5 per inning) reflected constant pressure, but his 4:1 K:BB ratio kept Yakult from stringing together a knockout rally.

The Dragons improved their season record to 49-65-1 (5th in Central League), while the Swallows fell to 50-60-1 (4th). The series result — a win, a tie and a win — gave Chunichi a boost heading into their next road series against the Yomiuri Giants at Tokyo Dome on 25 August. The Swallows return to Meiji Jingu Stadium to host the Hanshin Tigers on the same date.

Both teams remain outside the Climax Series spots, but Yakult's slight edge in the standings (+3.5 games over Chunichi) keeps the rivalry meaningful as the season enters its final phase.

A classic NPB pitching duel decided by one swing. Sanō provided the power, Yanagi provided the resilience, and the Dragons' bullpen held firm. Yakult had chances but couldn't get the key hit with runners in scoring position — a theme that has dogged them through this series.
