Albuquerque Isotopes vs Las Vegas Aviators

Both starters were gone before the fifth inning in a game that featured nine pitchers and five home runs.

Las Vegas struck first with three runs in the top of the first against Albuquerque starter Patrick Weigel. The Isotopes answered with two in the bottom half, but the Aviators extended their lead to 5-2 in the second on a two-run homer from Denzel Clarke (his first of the season on a rehab assignment from the Athletics) and a two-run shot from Drew Swift (his second).

Albuquerque flipped the game in the third and fourth innings. Conner Capel led off the fourth with a solo homer (his second) off Aviators starter Mason Barnett, and Sterlin Thompson followed later in the same inning with his tenth of the season, tying the game. The Isotopes pushed ahead 7-5 through four frames, stringing together eight hits over a two-inning stretch.

Las Vegas reclaimed control in the fifth and sixth. Jake Garland (2-0) silenced the Isotopes over 3.1 scoreless relief innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. His offense responded with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, building a 10-7 lead. Cole Conn drove in three runs with a double and two singles, while Johnathan Rodríguez added a double and an RBI.

Albuquerque's Jose Cordova hit a solo homer (his second) in the eighth, but Geoff Hartlieb closed the door with a perfect ninth, striking out three to earn his third save.

Garland's entry in the top of the fifth with Albuquerque leading 7-5 was the decisive move. He inherited one runner and stranded him, then retired nine of the next ten batters he faced. Over 3.1 innings, Garland held the Isotopes hitless through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, allowing the Aviators' offense — which knocked out 12 hits — to retake the lead and build a cushion.

• Sterlin Thompson (ABQ): 3-for-4, home run (10), walk, 2 RBI. Game-high 67 hitting game score. Thompson reached base four times and drove in a pair, extending his season OPS to .969 (.319/.465/.504).
• Cole Conn (LV): 3-for-5, double, 3 RBI, 2 runs. The 24-year-old catcher produced his second three-hit game in his last four starts and drove in half of his season RBI total (8) in this one game.
• Drew Swift (LV): 1-for-2, home run (2), walk, hit-by-pitch, sacrifice fly, 3 RBI, stolen base. Despite only one hit, Swift drove in three via the homer and a sac fly, reaching base safely in three of five plate appearances.
• Jake Garland (LV): W (2-0), 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. The 25-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.38 across 24 innings this season.
• Geoff Hartlieb (LV): S (3), 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 K. The veteran closer struck out the side in the ninth, needing only 20 pitches.

Garland's 3.1 scoreless innings flipped the game. When he entered, the Aviators trailed 7-5 and their starter had been knocked out. When he left, Las Vegas led 10-7. He faced 12 batters and allowed only one hit.

The box score reveals a game tilted in the Aviators' favour by timely hitting and bullpen dominance. Las Vegas stranded 13 runners (to Albuquerque's 8) but went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position to Albuquerque's 3-for-11 — near-identical rates. The difference came in the bullpen: Aviators relievers Garland and Hartlieb combined for 4.1 scoreless innings, while Albuquerque relievers — Castellano (4 IP, 4 ER), Bellozo (2 IP, 3 R, 0 ER) and Green (2 IP, 0 ER) — allowed runs in critical spots. Las Vegas drew nine walks to Albuquerque's three, generating extra baserunners that turned into five of their ten runs.

The five home runs (two by LV, three by ABQ) made this the seventh game in the 50-match H2H history to feature at least five home runs. The series has now seen 767 total runs across 50 meetings — 15.3 per game.

The Aviators (71-53, .573) strengthened their hold on the PCL West lead with their fourth win in five games. They sit 18 games above .500 with roughly 20 games remaining in the regular season. The Isotopes (62-64, .492) fell to three games below .500, their fourth loss in six games, and remain in the middle of the PCL East pack.

Next up: Las Vegas continues their road trip in Albuquerque with the series finale on Monday 24 August (first pitch 1:35 PM MT). Albuquerque then travel to face the Round Rock Express starting 26 August.

A textbook Triple-A slugfest: five home runs, 13 walks combined, nine pitchers used, and a 3-hour, 23-minute game time. The Aviators' bullpen — Garland in particular — was the difference after both starters were knocked out early. Las Vegas' depth (12 hits from six different players with at least one RBI) allowed them to weather Albuquerque's middle-inning surge and steal a win on the road.
