Lotte Giants vs Kiwoom Heroes

Lotte struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning. Hwang Seong-bin led off with a single and later scored on a Na Seung-yeop RBI base hit to make it 1-0 before Kiwoom starter Raúl Alcántara could record an out.

Kiwoom answered in the 3rd. Matt Davidson — the Heroes' designated hitter — crushed a solo home run to left field, his 22nd of the season, tying the game at 1-1. The Heroes took the lead in the 4th when they strung together three consecutive singles off Rodriguez, with Choo Jae-hyun delivering the go-ahead RBI.

Lotte retook control in the bottom half. A leadoff double by Jeon Jun-woo and a walk put two on before Han Dong-hee — Lotte's No. 4 hitter — laced a two-run single into left-centre, scoring both runners and putting the Giants up 3-2.

Kiwoom tied it again in the 6th. Seo Geon-chang led off with a double and scored on a groundout, making it 3-3.

The decisive blow came in the 7th. Na Seung-yeop launched a solo home run — his 14th of the season — to straightaway centre field, restoring Lotte's lead at 4-3. An inning later, Yoon Dong-hee added an RBI single to extend the margin to 5-3.

Kiwoom made it interesting in the 9th. Pinch-hitter Kim Jae-hyun led off with a solo home run — his 7th — cutting the deficit to 5-4, but Lotte closer Kim Won-joong shut the door from there, retiring the next three batters to secure the save.

Na Seung-yeop's solo homer in the 7th off Alcántara's hanging slider broke a 3-3 deadlock and proved to be the game-winner. It was the 25-year-old outfielder's second hit of the afternoon and capped a series in which he went 4-for-9 with a home run and four RBIs across the two games.

Elvin Rodriguez (Lotte Giants) — W, 8–8: 6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. The Dominican right-hander delivered exactly what Lotte needed after Jeremy Beasley's disastrous start the night before. Rodriguez improved to 3–0 with a 2.12 ERA in four starts against Kiwoom this season, pounding the strike zone with 65 of his 98 pitches for strikes.

Na Seung-yeop (Lotte Giants) — 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs, 2 runs. His seventh-inning solo shot was the difference, and he also drove in the game's first run with a first-inning single. Player of the Match.

Han Dong-hee (Lotte Giants) — 2-for-3, 2 RBIs. The cleanup hitter's two-run single in the 4th gave Lotte the lead for the first time since the opening inning. He also made a slick play at third base to rob Kim Woong-bin of a hit in the 5th.

Raúl Alcántara (Kiwoom Heroes) — L, 8–8: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. The Cuban right-hander kept his team in the game but was undone by the solo home run to Na in the 7th. He has now lost four consecutive decisions since July 26.

The box score reveals a game that Kiwoom controlled on the batters' box but lost on the scoreboard. Kiwoom out-hit Lotte 12–8 and struck out less frequently (7 K to Lotte's 10), yet managed only four runs because their hits were scattered across innings rather than clustered. Lotte, by contrast, got two-run hits in both the 1st and 4th innings, maximising their limited baserunners. The one Kiwoom error proved costly — a throwing miscue by shortstop Kim Jae-hyun in the 4th extended the inning and set up Han Dong-hee's go-ahead single.

Lotte's two home runs (Na, plus a solo shot from Son Seong-bin that was later corrected to a double on review) to Kiwoom's one (Davidson, Kim Jae-hyun) underscores the power edge that swung a tight game.

Lotte's series victory pulls them within 2.5 games of 7th-place Hanwha Eagles in the battle to escape the bottom third of the KBO standings. At 48–57, Kim Tae-hyung's side has now won four of their last six. Kiwoom (40–70) remain rooted in last place, 7.5 games back of 9th-place SSG Landers, with their playoff hopes all but extinguished mathematically.

Lotte travel to Seoul to face the LG Twins on Friday 21 August (11:00 KST). Kiwoom head to Gwangju for a weekend series against the Kia Tigers starting the same day.

A professional, no-drama win for Lotte — exactly what was required after Monday's emotional rollercoaster. Rodriguez gave them length and efficiency, the middle of the order delivered in the clutch, and Kim Won-joong closed it out. For Kiwoom, the fight was there but the margin for error remains razor-thin: one mistake, one home run, and a game that could have gone either way slipped through their grasp.
