Sendai Ikuei vs Chiben Wakayama

Chiben Wakayama struck immediately against Sendai Ikuei starter Furukawa Ryoya (2nd year, RHP). Leadoff batter Nagatomo Yusei smashed a triple off the right-centre fence — a statement of intent. Wake settled after the early turbulence, and Chiben's bats kept punishing the Sendai bullpen through the middle innings.

The Wakayama powerhouse pushed across further runs to reach double digits by the late innings. Sendai Ikuei scored twice more but never seriously threatened the margin.

The game was effectively over within the first half-inning. Nagatomo's leadoff triple set a tone from which Sendai Ikuei never recovered. Furukawa, who had been dominant through three tournament starts, was visibly struggling with command from the outset — two hit batsmen and three walks in 1⅔ innings told the story of a pitcher searching for the strike zone while Chiben's hitters refused to chase.

When Kurokawa's two-run single made it 5–0 with only one out recorded, the deficit felt insurmountable against a Chiben team that had already survived an 11-inning thriller against Tsuruga Kehi in the previous round. Sendai's coaching staff went to the bullpen early, but the pattern was set.

Chiben Wakayama's six hits and three walks in the first inning alone produced five runs — more than Sendai Ikuei's pitchers had conceded across three entire games (four total runs) in the tournament's earlier rounds. Furukawa entered the quarterfinal with a 1.50 ERA from three appearances; in 1⅔ innings on Tuesday, his tournament ERA more than doubled.

The 11 runs were Sendai's highest single-game concession of the entire Koshien campaign, including the Miyagi prefectural qualifiers. Chiben's 11–3 margin of victory was also the widest of any game on quarterfinal day.

Chiben Wakayama advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2021 — the year they won the national championship. They will face the winner of the Hanamaki Higashi vs Yokohama quarterfinal on 20 August 2026, with a place in the final on 22 August on the line.

For Sendai Ikuei, the 2022 champions bow out in the quarterfinals. Their tournament ends with two convincing wins followed by one comprehensive defeat — a stark illustration of the margins in single-elimination high school baseball.

This was a demolition from the opening pitch. Chiben Wakayama's disciplined, aggressive approach against an unsettled Furukawa turned the quarterfinal into a rout within 15 minutes. Sendai Ikuei's pitching, their strength through three rounds, was exposed by a Chiben lineup that refused to chase bad pitches and punished everything in the zone. On this form, Chiben look fully capable of reaching the final for the first time in five years.
