Iowa Cubs vs St. Paul

The Saints jumped ahead in the first inning without a hit that left the yard. Ben Ross singled to left, Emmanuel Rodriguez singled to centre and Aaron Sabato walked to load the bases with one out. Wallner stepped in and delivered an RBI fielder's choice, plating Ross to make it 1-0.

Germán Márquez, making his Saints debut, got into immediate trouble in the bottom of the first when the first two Cubs reached on a single and a walk. He stranded them both by retiring the next three hitters — a sign of the shutdown pitching that defined the afternoon.

Aaron Rozek entered in relief for the Saints in the fifth and immediately walked the leadoff batter — then induced a double play on the very next pitch. He repeated the trick in the sixth: leadoff walk, then another double play. Over 3.0 hitless innings, Rozek walked three and struck out three, but he never allowed a Cubs baserunner to reach scoring position after the first batter.

Those two double plays preserved the one-run lead and shifted momentum back to the Saints' bullpen.

That tells the story of timely hitting versus stranded runners: St. Paul scored both their runs with two outs or via a fielder's choice in the first, while Iowa went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base. The three double plays the Saints turned — two by Rozek on his own walks — wiped out three potential Cubs rallies. Despite being out-hit, St. Paul's 2.16 pitches-per-plate-appearance efficiency (induced early contact) contrasted with Iowa's deeper counts that produced base runners but no crooked number.

The Saints (69-50) solidified their hold near the top of the International League standings and avenged a 10-3 loss to the Cubs from the previous series game on August 13. Iowa (48-69) remained at the bottom of the IL West. St. Paul is off Monday before opening a six-game series at Huntington Park against the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday (6:05 p.m. CT, RHP Ryan Gallagher vs. RHP Trenton Denholm). The Cubs continue their homestand; their next opponent was not confirmed at the time of writing.

A textbook pitching-and-defense win. St. Paul's bullpen bent but never snapped, Rozek and Raya were outstanding in high-leverage spots, and Wallner's bat provided the only offence the Saints needed. Low on runs, high on tension — the kind of game that feels like a playoff preview in August.
