Memphis Redbirds vs Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

The Jumbo Shrimp jumped on Memphis starter Brandon White immediately. Cam Cannarella singled, Jonathon Long walked and Deyvison De Los Santos singled to load the bases with no outs in the top of the first. A run scored on a double play before Brayden Taylor smashed an RBI triple, making it 2-0.

Bennett Hostetler led off the second inning with a solo home run to push the lead to 3-0. In the third, Long walked again and De Los Santos deposited a two-run homer to make it 5-0.

Memphis got on the board in the bottom of the third. Chase Davis singled, Ramon Mendoza was hit by a pitch, and Ramos Urias' RBI groundout scored Davis. But Jumbo Shrimp starter Brandon White settled in, finishing 6.0 innings with one run allowed on four hits, six strikeouts and one walk.

The Redbirds chipped away in the seventh. Davis singled and Mendoza walked before Victor Scott II lined an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

Memphis tied it in the eighth. César Prieto reached on an infield single that was compounded by a two-base error, putting a runner on third. Thomas Saggese lifted a sacrifice fly. Colton Ledbetter then crushed a solo home run to pull within one. Davis reached on a strikeout and passed ball, and Scott II tied the game with an RBI triple, making it 5-5.

The decisive moment came in the top of the 10th. With zombie runner Maximo Acosta placed at second, Jonathon Long ripped a 104.0 mph double off Memphis reliever Matt Svanson — a sweeper at 88.4 mph — scoring Acosta to put Jacksonville ahead 6-5. Mason Vinyard then pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th, retiring the side in order to earn his first save of the season.

Jacksonville out-hit Memphis 9-8, but the decisive stat was the early damage: five runs on five hits in the first three innings against a Memphis team that had allowed only 3.2 runs per game over its previous seven. Jacksonville's bullpen — Josh White (2.0 IP, W, 6-2) and Mason Vinyard (1.0 IP, Sv) — combined for 3.0 scoreless innings after White's exit, while Memphis relievers allowed just one run over the final six innings but could not escape the 10th-inning traffic. The two errors (one by each side) kept both dugouts in it: Memphis's eighth-inning error gifted Jacksonville a base, and Jacksonville's earlier miscue extended a Memphis inning.

Jacksonville improved to 60-59 overall (18-27 second half) with the extra-inning win. The Jumbo Shrimp sit 10.5 games back in the second-half standings but are playing spoiler against the first-half champion Redbirds. Memphis (first-half IL champions) fell to 20-26 in the second half. The two teams meet again Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. ET, with Jacksonville left-hander Patrick Monteverde (3-2, 5.79 ERA) scheduled to face Memphis right-hander Jurrangelo Cijntje (0-3, 6.29 ERA).

Jacksonville built a lead that should have been insurmountable, then showed resilience when Memphis erased it. The Jumbo Shrimp's early aggression against White and the bullpen's composure in extras separated a game that could easily have slipped away. For Memphis, the eighth-inning fightback was admirable but the early pitching damage proved too deep to fully overcome.
