Gwinnett Stripers vs Durham Bulls

Durham struck immediately against Gwinnett starter Herick Hernandez. Carson Williams led off the game with a triple — his fifth of the season — and scored on a groundout by Tre' Morgan. Jack Suwinski added an RBI single, and Tatem Levins drove in another run, giving the Bulls a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

Austin Slater made it 4-0 in the third inning, crushing a solo home run to left-centre off Hernandez. It was Slater's third homer of the season for the Bulls (55-65, .458).

Gwinnett's only real threat came in the sixth. Down 4-0, Lizandro Espinoza — in his Triple-A debut — launched a two-run homer off Durham reliever Owen Wild, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Espinoza finished 2-for-3 with the home run and both Stripers RBIs.

Cam Hill entered in the seventh and retired the side on 11 pitches, earning his fifth save of the season.

Jake Woodford's start set the tone. The right-hander scattered four hits over four shutout innings, walking one and striking out two while throwing 48 pitches. He worked around a leadoff single in the first and a two-out single in the fourth, never allowing a runner to reach third. His clean outing forced Gwinnett to play from behind all game.

Durham out-hit Gwinnett 8-7 but the distribution tells the story. The Bulls collected five hits in the first two innings to build a four-run lead, while the Stripers managed only one hit through the first five frames. Durham's pitching staff threw 66 of 96 pitches for strikes (69%), compared to Gwinnett's 63 of 108 (58%). The Bulls also drew three walks to Gwinnett's one, consistently putting pressure on Hernandez, who was relieved after allowing four earned runs over two innings.

The win moved Durham to 55-65 on the season. Gwinnett fell to 60-60. Both teams are well out of International League playoff contention but remain in the middle of their respective divisions. The Bulls have now won three of their last five; the Stripers have dropped three of four.

The second game of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin shortly after the conclusion of Game 1.

A straightforward opener decided by Durham's fast start and Woodford's efficient pitching. Gwinnett's Espinoza provided the lone spark in a debut to remember, but the Stripers couldn't solve Durham's arms after falling into an early four-run hole.
