Louisville Bats vs Gwinnett Stripers

The Stripers struck in the first. Leadoff man Patrick Clohisy singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Jim Jarvis. Two more stolen bases put Jarvis in scoring position, but Bats starter Ben Wereski escaped further damage with a strikeout and two flyouts.

Louisville answered immediately. Edwin Arroyo walked and Juan Brito moved him to third on a hit-and-run single. Noelvi Marte tied the game 1-1 with an RBI base hit to right. A failed double-steal attempt ended the inning with Brito thrown out at home, leaving the score knotted after one.

Wereski retired five of six batters across the second and third innings, striking out four across that span. The only blemish: David McCabe's solo home run in the top of the third, putting Gwinnett ahead 2-1.

Gwinnett broke the game open in the sixth. Wereski, making his fifth Triple-A start, allowed a leadoff single and his second walk of the night, ending his outing at 5+ innings (6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 72 pitches). Chase Solesky relieved and immediately surrendered two runs on RBI singles from Lizandro Espinoza and Chuckie Robinson, stretching the lead to 4-1.

The Bats never pulled within one again. Though Carlos Jorge — who reached base three times — tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-2, Louisville's offense went scoreless in three of the final four innings.

David McCabe (Gwinnett) — Player of the Match The Stripers first baseman delivered in the clutch twice: a solo home run in the third and an RBI single in the ninth. His two RBI accounted for the winning margin.

Patrick Clohisy (Gwinnett) The leadoff hitter set the tone with a first-inning single and stolen base, scoring the game's opening run.

Carlos Jorge (Louisville) The Bats outfielder provided the home side's brightest moment, recording his first Triple-A triple with the Bats in the seventh and scoring on a wild pitch. He reached base three times with two hits and a walk.

Ben Wereski (Louisville, L, 2-2) The 25-year-old right-hander scattered six hits over five innings with five strikeouts, keeping Louisville within striking distance before the bullpen could not preserve the deficit.

Gwinnett's 5-2 win reflected efficient run production rather than overwhelming offense. The Stripers turned nine hits and three walks into five runs, while Louisville managed only six hits and two walks. Both teams committed one error. The Stripers' three stolen bases in the first inning alone created immediate pressure that forced Wereski into a high pitch count early. Louisville's 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position told the story of missed opportunities, particularly the failed double-steal in the first and a bases-loaded flyout in the third.

The loss dropped the Bats to a season-worst 18-35 in the second half, 16 games back of the division lead in the International League West. Louisville (57-69 overall) has lost five of its last six. Gwinnett, at .500 in the second half (26-27), sits 6.0 games back in the West but remained within striking distance of a wild-card push.

Louisville continues the six-game homestand against Gwinnett on Thursday 27 August before the Stripers depart. The Bats then host the Nashville Sounds (1-4 September) before ending the season on the road. Gwinnett travels to Charlotte for a series beginning 1 September.

Gwinnett did what playoff-contending teams do: score early, capitalise on opponent mistakes and never trail after the third inning. Louisville's young roster, by contrast, continues to struggle with timely hitting and defensive execution. The 5-2 scoreline was a fair reflection of a game where the Stripers were sharper in every phase.
