Meralco Bolts vs Barangay Ginebra San Miguel

A tight first quarter (21-20) gave way to Meralco seizing control in the second. The Bolts outscored Ginebra 28-21 in the period to take a 49-41 lead into halftime — a margin they would never relinquish.

The third quarter was a stalemate at 20-20, leaving Meralco up 69-61 heading into the final frame. Ginebra, led by import Riley Grigsby's 34 points and RJ Abarrientos' 21, kept clawing back, but Varnado answered every run. He scored 12 of his game-high 31 in the final three minutes, including clutch baskets that snuffed out Ginebra's comeback attempts.

Meralco's second-quarter surge was the decisive stretch. After a 21-20 first quarter that saw neither team gain separation, the Bolts opened the second period with a 10-2 run built on defensive stops and transition buckets. Chris Newsome orchestrated the offence and Cliff Hodge provided the energy off the glass, allowing Meralco to build a lead Ginebra could never fully erase.

• Chris Newsome (Meralco) — 18 pts, 8 reb, 5 ast, 2 stl. The veteran guard provided the steady hand Meralco needed to manage the game after establishing the lead.
• Cliff Hodge (Meralco) — 13 pts, 7 reb. His activity on the boards (7 rebounds, including 3 offensive) extended possessions and limited Ginebra's transition chances.
• Riley Grigsby (Ginebra) — 34 pts, 10 reb. The Ginebra import kept his side within striking distance with a double-double, but lacked support beyond Abarrientos.
• RJ Abarrientos (Ginebra) — 21 pts. The only other Ginebra player in double figures.

Meralco's quarter-by-quarter scoring (21-28-20-28) shows a team that established control early and held it. The eight-point halftime gap proved decisive: Ginebra could never get within one possession in the second half despite Grigsby's 34 points. Varnado's 12-point outburst in the final three minutes (12 of Meralco's last 16 points) highlights how the game tightened late despite the final nine-point margin.

Scottie Thompson made his conference debut after recovering from a hamstring injury, logging 36 minutes and finishing with 4 pts, 6 reb and 5 ast — his presence clearly valued even at less than full match sharpness.

Meralco improved to 3-5, climbing to fifth in Group B and keeping their quarterfinal hopes alive after a four-game slide. Ginebra dropped to 2-4, falling to the bottom of the group. The loss is particularly damaging for Ginebra given the congested middle of the Group B standings.

Varnado's return changed the geometry of Meralco's offence — his ability to score in the clutch (12 points in the final three minutes) was precisely what the Bolts lacked during their losing streak. Ginebra, lean on scoring beyond Grigsby and Abarrientos, will need more from their supporting cast if they are to climb off the bottom of the group.
