Mineros vs Astros

The second quarter was decisive. Mineros conceded the opening quarter at pace but responded with a defensive clampdown, limiting Astros to well below their first-quarter output. The swing — from a deficit after one to a multi-possession lead by halftime — forced Astros to play catch-up for the remainder of the contest. They narrowed the gap in the third and fourth quarters but never regained the lead.

Tavario Miller, the 6'8" centre who joined Mineros for the 2026 season, provided an interior presence on both ends. His work on the boards and rim protection in the middle quarters disrupted Astros' rhythm and gave Mineros second-chance opportunities at the other end.

Argentinian point guard Joaquín Valinotti orchestrated the offence, controlling tempo during Mineros' decisive runs. His ability to break pressure and find shooters kept Astros' defence off balance.

For Astros, captain Francisco "Paco" Cruz shouldered much of the scoring load. The veteran Mexican guard, who joined Jalisco for the 2026 campaign, kept the visitors competitive with timely baskets during their fourth-quarter push. Forward Jasper Floyd, a former NCAA player making his professional debut in Mexico, contributed on both ends but found scoring tougher against Mineros' second-quarter adjustments.

Player of the match: Tavario Miller — his interior defence and rebounding in the middle periods anchored the turnaround.

Mineros held Astros below their season scoring average (pre-game: 88.7 PPG across 10 games), a testament to their second-quarter defensive adjustment. The home side's depth told in the second half: Mineros sustained their intensity while Astros' production dipped after the first period. The six-point margin reflects a game Mineros controlled from the second quarter onward rather than a frantic finish.

Mineros improved their record to 6-3 in the LNBP after sweeping the series. The five-game winning streak, including consecutive wins over the pre-series league leaders, announces Mineros as a genuine contender in the Western Conference.

Astros slipped to 8-4 after dropping both games in Zacatecas. While still holding a strong overall record, the series exposed vulnerabilities against a physical home side that can dictate tempo through defence.

Mineros' next fixture is against Freseros de Irapuato. Astros return home to face Santos de San Luis Potosí as they look to halt their two-game skid.

This was not a lone result — Mineros backed up their Game 1 win with a disciplined performance built on defence. Astros remain a quality side, but Mineros have shown they can match and beat the LNBP's best on consecutive nights.
