Puerto Rico U17 vs Turkey U17

Turkey wasted no time seizing control. Their tournament averages told the story before tip-off — 52.4% on two-pointers and 83.7% from the free-throw line — and they validated both numbers against a Puerto Rico defence that had no answer for the backcourt duo of Ömer Kutluay and Darius Karutasu.

Puerto Rico, who had averaged 88.5 points per game through their first two outings, were held to 77. The 21-point margin was the largest of any Group C match on the day.

Turkey pushed the lead into double figures by the second quarter and never looked back, shooting efficiently from all three levels while their defence forced Puerto Rico into difficult looks. A significant disparity in two-point field-goal percentage — Turkey entered at 52.4% compared to Puerto Rico's 39.8% — proved decisive.

Turkey's first-half surge. After a competitive opening quarter, Turkey's depth and shooting efficiency took over in the second. By half-time the lead had stretched beyond reach, and Puerto Rico — having needed fourth-quarter comebacks in each of their first two games — had no answer against a Turkey side that refused to let them back in.

Ömer Kutluay continued his exceptional tournament. The son of Turkish basketball legend İbrahim Kutluay entered the game with 65 points across the first two matches (39 vs New Zealand, 26 vs Slovenia) and was again Turkey's centrepiece, controlling the pace and creating for himself and others.

Darius Karutasu provided the complementary firepower. Having scored 58 points total in the opening two games, he was again a primary scoring threat, stretching Puerto Rico's defence and capitalising at the free-throw line.

The team comparison data from FIBA highlights the chasm between these sides entering the match. Turkey's tournament averages of 99.5 points, 51.5 rebounds and 18 assists per game dwarfed Puerto Rico's 88.5 points, 47 rebounds and 16 assists. The most telling gap was in efficiency: Turkey shot 52.4% on two-pointers and 83.7% at the line, compared to Puerto Rico's 39.8% and 72.5%. In a game where three-point shooting was roughly even (30.6% for PUR, 32.7% for TUR), the disparity inside the arc and at the stripe was the difference.

Turkey finish Group C as winners with a 3-0 record and advance to the Round of 16 on Wednesday 1 July. Puerto Rico drop to 2-1 and finish second in the group, also progressing to the knockout phase but likely facing a tougher opponent in the Round of 16.

In the other Group C match played simultaneously on 30 June, New Zealand faced Slovenia at BDC National Teams Venue — a result that determined the final group order behind the top two.

Turkey were the better team from start to finish. Their shooting efficiency and home-court advantage proved too much for a Puerto Rico side that had relied on rallies in their previous games. The Kutluay-Karutasu combination looks capable of carrying Turkey deep into this tournament.
