Canada vs Puerto Rico

Canada came out flying in front of a partisan crowd. Andrew Nembhard scored 12 of his 23 points in the opening frame, and Gilgeous-Alexander added six as Canada raced to a 31-16 lead after one quarter. The margin never dipped below double digits the rest of the way.

By halftime, Canada led 56-38. Nembhard (13 points) and Gilgeous-Alexander (12) had already combined for 25 points, and Dillon Brooks chipped in 11 in the first half. The third quarter followed the same script: Canada outscored Puerto Rico 27-22 to take an 83-60 lead into the final period, and a 27-24 fourth quarter sealed the 26-point margin.

The game was effectively decided in the first six minutes. Canada opened on a 10-0 run, forced Puerto Rico into early foul trouble, and shot 13-of-20 from the floor in the opening quarter. Puerto Rico never recovered from the 15-point deficit after one, and Canada's lead swelled to as many as 26 points in the second half.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada) — Player of the Match. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard finished with 26 points (9-14 FG, 7-8 FT), 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks in 26 minutes. He recorded a game-high efficiency rating of 29. "It's amazing," Gilgeous-Alexander said post-game. "It's special. I don't take those opportunities for granted to be able to play in front of the people that watched me grow up."

Andrew Nembhard (Canada) — The Indiana Pacers guard matched Gilgeous-Alexander with a 29 efficiency rating, scoring 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range, adding 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Thirteen of his points came in the first half to set the tone.

Dillon Brooks (Canada) — The Phoenix Suns forward added 15 points in 22 minutes, with 11 coming in the first half as Canada built its commanding lead.

Ismael Romero (Puerto Rico) — The veteran centre led Puerto Rico with 17 points and 5 rebounds in a losing effort.

Enrique Freeman (Puerto Rico) — The two-way G-League forward recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Canada fielded seven NBA players in its lineup, including Kyshawn George (Washington Wizards), Leonard Miller (Chicago Bulls), Ryan Nembhard (Dallas Mavericks), and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Atlanta Hawks). Puerto Rico had two NBA-affiliated players: Ethan Thompson and Freeman, both on two-way contracts. Thompson scored 14 points, as did Alfonso Plummer.

Canada's 64.8% field-goal percentage and 46 made baskets — tied for the most in Americas Qualifiers history — reflect a near-flawless offensive execution rather than a merely hot shooting night. The team recorded 29 assists against just 11 turnovers, a ratio of 2.6:1 that speaks to ball movement and spacing. The 60-34 paint scoring differential is the most telling stat: Canada's NBA-calibre athleticism overwhelmed Puerto Rico's interior defence, and the hosts didn't need to rely heavily on outside shooting (29.6% from three) because they generated high-percentage looks at the rim at will.

Puerto Rico shot 42% from the field and made 10 three-pointers, a respectable output, but their 38 points in the paint and inability to generate stops on the other end meant they were chasing the game from the opening minutes.

Canada clinched first place in Group B with a perfect 5-0 record, having already secured qualification for the Second Round before tip-off. Seeding carries weight, however, with Brazil (4-0), Uruguay (4-1), and Mexico (3-0) also in strong positions. The Second Round of the FIBA Americas World Cup qualifying tournament begins on 27 August.

Puerto Rico (1-4) now faces a must-win road game against the Bahamas on Monday to keep their Second Round hopes alive. The Bahamas, led by NBA players VJ Edgecombe, Buddy Hield and Eric Gordon, pose a significant threat.

Canada plays Jamaica on Monday, also in Hamilton, in the final first-round game for both teams. The Canadians have already advanced, but seeding for the next phase remains at stake.

A statement performance from a Canada side that looked every bit a top contender in the Americas. The combination of elite NBA talent, unselfish play, and home-court comfort produced a near-perfect offensive outing. Puerto Rico competed after the opening quarter but simply lacked the firepower to stay with a roster that goes seven-deep in NBA players. The gap on paper is real, and it showed on the scoreboard.
