China's defensive adjustment coming out of halftime shifted the game. China's 92 points exceeded their tournament average of 82.4 per game, while Chinese Taipei's 74 fell short of their 77.8 average. The defensive turnaround was the key: after conceding at least 80 points in four of their first five group games (including 92 to Japan), China held Chinese Taipei to their second-lowest score of the campaign. The rebounding battle — China's strength on paper — likely tilted decisively in their favour, creating extra possessions that Chinese Taipei could not offset.

The result lifts China to 3-3 (9 points) in Group B and secures their place in the Second Round of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, keeping alive their bid to reach the World Cup. For Chinese Taipei, the defeat leaves them at 2-4 (8 points) — their fate now dependent on the result of the simultaneous Group B match between Korea and Japan in the same arena.

If Japan beat Korea, Chinese Taipei will also advance to the Second Round alongside China. If Korea beat Japan, Korea will take the second qualification spot and Chinese Taipei will be eliminated.

China had entered the window on uncertain footing after the heavy loss to Japan on 3 July — a defeat that prompted sharp criticism on Chinese social media, with one commenter describing the team as having "no organisation, no teamwork, no scoring, no defence, no fighting spirit" (South China Morning Post). Monday's response, while far from perfect, answered the most urgent question: China's World Cup qualification campaign lives on.

China will now await the start of the Second Round, scheduled to begin on 27 August 2026. Chinese Taipei's next match is to be determined by the qualification outcome.

China produced the performance their situation demanded — controlled, progressively dominant, and decisive when the game was in the balance. The first-half wobbles will concern the coaching staff, but the second-half response showed a team capable of rising to pressure. For Chinese Taipei, the wait for a first competitive win over China since the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship continues.
