Football is the most popular sport in Gambia, one of Africa's smallest nations. Despite limited resources, the Gambia has developed a passionate football culture and 1 leagues with 0 teams. Wallidan's sustained dominance of domestic Football over more than five decades has made them the most recognised club brand in Gambia. The club has represented Gambia in CAF Champions League qualifying on multiple occasions.

Hawks FC, Steve Biko FC, and Gambia Armed Forces FC are among the other clubs that have competed at the top of the GFA League First Division. Gambia's domestic league is modest in scale but increasingly competitive, with the national federation working to develop youth academies and coaching standards that can channel talent into the national team pipeline. The success of Gambian-born players in European leagues — particularly in Scandinavia and the UK — has raised awareness of the country's football talent internationally.

Gambia qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history in 2021 — a historic milestone for a nation of just 2.5 million people. In 2022, CAF banned Gambia from using the stadium for international matches due to inadequate infrastructure including the lack of an electronic scoreboard, poor fixed seating, and insufficient medical facilities.
