Guatemala — Football

Football is the most popular sport in Guatemala, with a passionate following and a competitive domestic league. The country has 1 leagues and 12 teams, with the Liga Nacional at the pinnacle. The rivalry between Comunicaciones and Municipal, both from Guatemala City, is one of the most intense in Central American football and forms the centrepiece of the domestic calendar.

While Guatemala has not qualified for the FIFA World Cup, the national team has been competitive in CONCACAF tournaments, and the country has a long tradition of producing talented footballers who have competed across Central America and in North American leagues.

Football was introduced to Guatemala in the early 20th century and quickly became the nation's favourite sport. The Federacion Nacional de Futbol de Guatemala was founded in 1919, making it one of the oldest football federations in Central America. Guatemala won the CONCACAF Championship in 1967, their most significant international achievement.

The domestic league has operated since the 1940s, and the rivalry between Comunicaciones and Municipal has been the defining feature of Guatemalan football for decades. The country continues to develop its football infrastructure and youth programmes with the aim of qualifying for a first FIFA World Cup.

The Federacion Nacional de Futbol de Guatemala is the governing body of football in Guatemala, founded in 1919. A member of CONCACAF and FIFA, FEDEFUT oversees the Liga Nacional, the Copa de Guatemala, and all national teams. The federation has faced governance challenges but continues to work on developing football at all levels.

The Guatemalan football league system consists of three tiers. The Liga Nacional features 12 clubs competing in Apertura and Clausura tournaments. The Primera Division serves as the second tier. The Copa de Guatemala is the national knockout competition. Comunicaciones and Municipal have dominated the Liga Nacional historically, with dozens of titles between them.

Guatemalan club football revolves around the "Clasico Chapín" between CSD Comunicaciones and CSD Municipal, both based in Guatemala City. Comunicaciones are the most decorated club with the most league titles, while Municipal enjoy a massive and passionate fan base. Their derby is the biggest sporting event in the country.

Other notable clubs include Antigua GFC, Xelaju MC from Quetzaltenango, and Coban Imperial, which provide regional representation and have won domestic honours. The Liga Nacional, despite being less internationally prominent, generates strong local interest and competitive matches.
