Uganda — Football

Football is the most popular sport in Uganda, with a passionate fan culture and a domestic league that produces talented players for the broader African and global game. The country is home to 1 leagues featuring 16 teams, with the Premier League as the top-flight competition. The Uganda Cranes, as the national team is known, have a proud history in African competition and returned to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 after a long absence.

Uganda's football scene is characterised by fierce local rivalries, enthusiastic crowds, and a growing investment in youth development that aims to elevate the standard of Ugandan Football on the continental stage.

Football was introduced to Uganda during the British colonial period in the early 20th century. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations was established in 1924, making it one of the oldest football associations in Africa. The country's finest international moment came in 1978 when the Uganda Cranes finished as runners-up at the Africa Cup of Nations, a remarkable achievement during a turbulent period in the country's history.

Following decades of political instability that impacted football development, Uganda returned to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 after a 39-year absence. The Cranes have since re-established themselves as a competitive force in East African and continental Football, with the 2019 AFCON appearance — where they reached the round of 16 — demonstrating continued progress.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations is the governing body of Football in Uganda, responsible for organising domestic competitions and managing the national teams. Founded in 1924, FUFA oversees the Uganda Premier League, the Uganda Cup, and all national team operations. As a member of CAF and FIFA, the federation has focused on modernising Ugandan football governance and investing in youth development.

The Ugandan Football pyramid features the Uganda Premier League at the summit, with 16 clubs competing for the national championship. The FUFA Big League serves as the second division, with regional leagues forming the lower tiers. The league has grown in professionalism and broadcasting coverage in recent years.

The Uganda Cup is the main knockout competition. KCCA FC, Vipers SC, and SC Villa have been the dominant forces in the Premier League, with their matches providing the highlights of the domestic season.

SC Villa (Sport Club Villa) is the most decorated club in Ugandan Football history, with the most league titles. Their rivalry with KCCA FC (Kampala Capital City Authority) is the biggest fixture in Ugandan football. Vipers SC have emerged as a major force in recent years, challenging the traditional powers and representing Uganda in CAF continental competitions.

Express FC, URA FC, and BUL FC are among the other clubs that contribute to the competitive landscape of the Uganda Premier League. The growing professionalism of Ugandan clubs and their participation in continental competitions has helped raise the standard of domestic Football.

Uganda's greatest international achievement was finishing as runners-up at the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana. The Uganda Cranes have not yet qualified for the FIFA World Cup, but the national team's return to the AFCON in 2017 and subsequent progression to the round of 16 in 2019 have signalled a revival of Ugandan Football at the continental level.

At club level, KCCA FC, Vipers SC, and SC Villa have represented Uganda in CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup campaigns, gaining valuable experience against the continent's strongest clubs.

The Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, with a capacity of approximately 45,202, is the national stadium of Uganda and hosts major international matches. St Mary's Stadium Kitende, home to Vipers SC, and Lugogo Stadium in Kampala provide additional venues for domestic Football. Investment in stadium infrastructure continues as FUFA works to improve facilities across the country.

Football culture in Uganda is enthusiastic and deeply embedded in community life. The KCCA FC-SC Villa rivalry is the most significant fixture in Ugandan football, generating passionate support and dividing loyalties across Kampala. The Uganda Cranes' return to the AFCON reinvigorated national pride in the team, and major matches bring the country together. European football, particularly the English Premier League, is hugely popular, with fans gathering in viewing centres to watch matches. Street football is ubiquitous, and the sport serves as a powerful vehicle for social cohesion in communities across Uganda.
