Twelve minutes into the second half, Dairon Asprilla thought he had scored but saw his effort ruled out for offside after Cauteruccio redirected the ball inside the area. The warning went unheeded by Grêmio. In the 58th minute, Sagredo delivered an excellent cross from the left and Asprilla arrived at the far post to beat Cristian Pavón to the ball and convert, making it 3-2.

Martín Cauteruccio (Bolívar) — Scored his eighth consecutive CONMEBOL competition appearance with a goal, a run spanning the Libertadores (2015, 2016, 2024, 2025, 2026) and Sudamericana (2016, 2025, 2026).

Bolívar generated 4.2 expected goals (xG), the third-highest total in any CONMEBOL competition match in 2026. That figure — behind only Botafogo's 6.84 xG against Independiente Petrolero and Flamengo's 5.00 xG against Cusco — reflects the volume of high-quality chances Bolívar created, particularly from wide areas. The 3-2 scoreline undersells their dominance in open play, but Grêmio's ability to score twice from limited opportunities (both goals arrived from Bolívar defensive errors or deflections) keeps the tie alive.

Both teams attempted numerous long-range shots, a tactical byproduct of the 3,640m altitude in La Paz, where the ball travels faster and goalkeepers face additional difficulty tracking movement.

Bolívar take a 3-2 lead to Porto Alegre for the second leg on Thursday 30 July at the Arena do Grêmio (19:00 local time). The winner will face São Paulo in the Round of 16. Grêmio will be confident playing at home, where they have traditionally been one of Brazil's strongest sides in continental competition, but Bolívar will aim to replicate the attacking intensity they showed in La Paz while protecting their narrow advantage.

Since the start of 2025, Bolívar's last two CONMEBOL victories have both come against Brazilian opposition — Grêmio here and Fluminense in the Libertadores in April 2025.

A thoroughly entertaining first leg that lived up to the altitude-influenced chaos. Bolívar's 4.2 xG and relentless wide play merited a bigger win, but Weverton's interventions and Grêmio's resilience in front of goal mean the tie is far from over. The second leg in Porto Alegre will test whether Bolívar can reproduce this intensity away from the thin air of La Paz.
