Pickering Town vs York

York started brightly. Inside ten minutes, Sutton Greening threaded a pass through to Tom Hewson, whose first attempt was blocked and whose second was hooked off the line by a Pickering defender. But the Pikes struck first through Coulibaly, who used his strength to hold off Elvis Hall and slide the ball past Campbell White.

Thompson's stunning strike from the left made it 2-0 before the half-hour mark, curling into the far top corner. White kept City in the game with a close-range block, and the defence threw bodies in front of subsequent efforts.

Captain Ollie Belleh unlocked the Pickering defence with a through ball nine minutes before half-time. Hewson, 17, fought off his marker, rounded goalkeeper Luke Jackson and slotted home to halve the deficit.

York started the second half with purpose. Belleh struck the woodwork from a free-kick, and Hewson equalised in the 58th minute after Woolford used his pace to beat his man and deliver a low cross for the forward to tap home.

Hewson then chipped the ball over Jackson and towards goal — the ball was cleared off the line and, after a delay, the officials ruled it had not crossed. The disallowed hat-trick goal proved decisive. Within minutes, Pickering scored to regain the lead. A delivery into the box was diverted high into the net by a trialist, and the momentum swung back to the hosts.

Tom Hewson (York City) — The 17-year-old striker scored twice and had a third controversially disallowed. His composure to round the goalkeeper for the first goal and his poacher's finish for the second stood out, but he was denied a match ball by a marginal offside call.

Souleymane Coulibaly (Pickering Town) — The experienced striker, last season's NCEL Premier Division top scorer, opened the scoring with a composed finish and occupied the York defence before departing with an injury after half an hour.

Charlie Thompson (Pickering Town) — The former Doncaster Rovers and Tadcaster Albion youngster doubled the lead with a spectacular curling effort from the left touchline into the far top corner.

Ollie Belleh (York City) — The York captain was the most experienced outfield player on the pitch for City, splitting the defence with a pinpoint through ball for Hewson's first goal and striking the woodwork from a free-kick.

The 4-2 scoreline reflected a game of two distinct phases. York dominated possession and created chances in the opening 15 minutes of each half, but lacked a cutting edge beyond Hewson. Pickering, by contrast, were ruthless in transition — their three first-half chances yielded two goals, and they capitalised when York's momentum stalled after the disallowed equaliser. The 928 attendance at Mill Lane was a significant crowd for a pre-season friendly, reflecting local interest in the derby fixture.

For York City, this was a deliberate exercise in giving academy players minutes. First-team manager Stuart Maynard confirmed after City's 2-1 win over Barnsley on Saturday that he would field a youth XI at Pickering, citing concerns over the Mill Lane pitch and a desire to protect senior players. York's first-team squad played a separate behind-closed-doors friendly against Middlesbrough Under-21s on the same evening, winning 6-0 at the LNER Community Stadium.

Pickering Town, managed by former York City captain Simon Heslop (84 appearances for the Minstermen), recorded their first win of pre-season after defeats to Field Olympic, Northallerton Town and Scarborough Athletic, and a draw with Beverley Town.

York City's next pre-season fixture is at home to Premier League side Sunderland at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday 18 July (3pm kick-off). Pickering Town travel to Old Malton St Mary's on Thursday 16 July (6.30pm).

A useful work-out for both sides, but the scoreline is secondary to the context. York's youngsters showed promise — particularly Hewson — but were outmuscled by a more experienced Pickering side playing on their home ground. The Pikes, who count former York players Michael Coulson, Nathan Dyer and Blake Drury among their squad, will take confidence from a first pre-season win.
