Eldense vs Millwall

Millwall, playing their second friendly of a week-long training camp in Alicante, started brightly at the Estadio Nuevo Pepico Amat. But the chaos continued. Substitute Caspar De Norre — one of the 10 changes — was shown a straight red card minutes after coming on, again for dissent. The referee then halted play after objects were thrown onto the pitch, and Neil was seen remonstrating with the officials through a translator.

Eldense capitalised on their numerical advantage, scoring in the second minute of stoppage time (90+2') to make it 2-1. An Eldense player was also sent off in the 90+3' minute, leaving both sides finishing with 10 men.

Tairyk Arconte — The summer signing from Rodez announced himself with a well-taken finish from a flowing team move, but his moment of madness in the 49th minute undid much of the good work. The red card for dissent is a concern for Neil ahead of the Championship season.

Mark Sykes — The Irish midfielder, another summer arrival, scored his first Millwall goal with a poacher's finish from close range. He looked sharp throughout the first half.

Jenson Metcalfe — Dictated the tempo from deep midfield, constantly dropping to collect the ball and switching play. The Millwall fan podcast "The 1885 Show" described his display as "excellent," noting his aggressive pressing and vocal leadership.

Arconte's red card is a reminder of the discipline issues that can surface in pre-season, but the quality of his goal and the first-half fluidity under Neil will be the more significant takeaway for Millwall fans.

A pre-season friendly that offered two starkly different halves: 45 minutes of encouraging, progressive football from Millwall, followed by 45 minutes of farce. Neil will be pleased with the patterns of play and the performances of his new signings, but the three red cards — two of his own players' making — will require a word behind closed doors. The first-half XI, particularly Metcalfe and Cundle, looked capable of the style Neil wants to implement in the Championship.
