For Manchester United, this is the first of six pre-season friendlies under newly permanent head coach Michael Carrick after his interim spell earned him the job. For Wrexham, the result extends an encouraging pre-season after a 0–0 draw with Wisla Krakow a week earlier. Phil Parkinson's side narrowly missed the Championship play-offs last season. They travel to the USA for a triple-header against Leeds United, Liverpool and Sunderland before their competitive opener at Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup first round on 7 August.

A pre-season friendly that delivered exactly what pre-season friendlies deliver: fitness minutes, a debut for a new signing, and a result that matters more for the winning side's momentum than the losing side's concerns. Wrexham took their chance and defended resolutely; United were disjointed but will improve with minutes. No alarm bells, but no illusions either.
