South Shields, playing their seventh pre-season friendly of the summer, enjoyed the advantage of greater match rhythm and familiarity with each other. Sunderland's U21 side, in contrast, fielded a blend of age groups including Under-16s, Under-18s and Under-21s, with the emphasis on development rather than result.

The draw was South Shields' seventh pre-season outing of the 2026/27 campaign under head coach Mike Williamson. The Mariners' pre-season schedule continues with a home fixture against Harrogate Town on 21 July, followed by trips to Redcar Athletic (25 July) and Gateshead (28 July) before the National League North season begins.

For Sunderland, the fixture formed part of the U21s' pre-season programme, with the young Black Cats using the game against senior non-league opposition to test their academy prospects in a physical environment. According to Sunderland AFC's social media channels, the squad was described as "a mixed group of Under-18s and Under-21s" who "battled" to earn the draw.

"We were so proud of them," Sunderland U21s coach told the Sunderland Echo, praising the display. "You're going from Under-18s or Under-21s to playing against an experienced National League North side, and they stepped up."

A fair result on a drizzly afternoon at Mariners Park. South Shields dominated spells without being clinical, while Sunderland's youngsters showed resilience and quality in spells — Munyakazi's goal a reminder of the talent coming through the Academy of Light. The 1-1 draw gives both sides something to build on as pre-season progresses.
