Sporting CP vs Strasbourg

Sporting needed just four minutes to open the scoring. New signing Issa Doumbia collected the ball on the right, cut inside, and unleashed a ferocious drive that flew past Strasbourg goalkeeper Mikołaj Piekutowski — a stunning individual effort that the official Sporting website described as a proper "cartão de apresentação" (calling card) for the Italian midfielder.

Sergi Altimira doubled the lead in the 36th minute. The Spanish midfielder, on loan from Real Betis, swept home from the edge of the box after a Geny Catamo cross was only partially cleared. Piekutowski was at fault, allowing the ball to squirm under his body.

Geny Catamo scored the sixth in the 80th minute, cutting inside from the right and finishing with his trademark composure. Fotis Ioannidis completed the rout in the 84th minute, tapping home from close range after a defensive mix-up in the Strasbourg box.

Strasbourg's decision to replace nine of their starting XI at half-time, while understandable in pre-season, backfired. The new combinations took time to settle, and Sporting exploited the confusion ruthlessly. Andersen's headed goal within six minutes of the restart effectively ended the contest, and the floodgates opened from there.

The hosts scored from all areas: a long-range strike (Doumbia), a defensive rebound (Altimira), a set-piece header (Andersen), a penalty (Zalazar), a poacher's finish (Araújo), a solo run (Catamo), and a tap-in (Ioannidis). That variety — seven different scorers scoring seven different types of goal — points to a side with multiple attacking threats, exactly what Borges has been building during pre-season. Strasbourg's 11 substitutions prevented any defensive continuity, but Sporting's intensity was notably high for a pre-season fixture.

Sporting CP complete their training camp in Lagos with a morale-boosting result. Pre-season has included a 4-1 win over Celtic and now this 7-0 demolition of a Ligue 1 side. Rui Borges' squad will now prepare for the Troféu Cinco Violinos against AS Monaco, with tickets already on sale via the club's official channels. The Primeira Liga season is expected to begin in early August. For Strasbourg, this was a chastening exercise ahead of their Ligue 1 campaign, which kicks off later in the summer under head coach Hugo Oliveira.

The attacking depth and variety Borges has at his disposal is striking.
