Dover vs Deal Town

Dover made the breakthrough in the 21st minute. A quick throw-in caused chaos inside the Deal penalty area and Onu reacted fastest, forcing the loose ball home from close range.

The home side doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half. A trialist forward held the ball up well before laying it back to the edge of the box, where George Wilkinson arrived to stroke a composed first-time finish beyond James Tonkin (52').

Deal reduced the deficit in the 79th minute. Jamie Kennedy converted despite strong Dover appeals for offside, setting up a tense final 10 minutes. Harry Beadle was booked a minute later as Deal pressed for an equaliser, but Dover held firm through three minutes of stoppage time.

Wilkinson's second-half goal was the decisive moment. Deal had frustrated Dover for much of the first period after Onu's opener and carried threat on the counter, but the 52nd-minute strike — a calm, technical finish from the edge of the area — gave the hosts a two-goal cushion that proved just enough. Deal's late response never quite produced a clear sight of goal.

The match was a typical pre-season friendly: 10 Dover substitutes used, 13 Deal substitutes, and a stop-start rhythm that prioritised minutes over structure. Dover's 2–1 scoreline reflected their superior quality in the final third — they created clearer chances from open play, particularly through Luke Baptiste down the left (forcing a diving save from Tonkin, seeing a header cleared off the line). Deal's goal came from a set-piece scramble, their primary route to goal all evening. The attendance of 498 at Crabble was healthy for a midweek pre-season fixture between Kent neighbours.

Dover's second pre-season victory of the summer — following a 1–0 win over Margate — continues Jake Leberl's preparations for the National League South campaign, which begins in August. The Whites host Burgess Hill Town on Saturday 25 July (15:00) in their next friendly.

For Deal Town, this was their fifth pre-season fixture. The Hoops visit Minster on 28 July as they gear up for the Southern Counties East League Premier Division season.

A useful workout for both sides. Dover's quality in the final third proved the difference, but Deal's organisation and late goal will encourage manager Steve King that his side can compete against higher-level opposition. Pre-season caveats apply — both teams were experimental, especially in the second half — but the patterns (Dover's wide threat, Deal's resilience from set pieces) are worth monitoring.
