Gillingham vs Millwall

The goal was a well-worked team move. Goalkeeper Lennon MacLorg sent a long pass forward, Goodwin flicked it on, and James Brophy latched onto the ball before driving towards the Millwall area. Brophy waited for the overlapping run of trialist Nick Freeman, who entered the right side of the box and cut the ball back for Goodwin to slot home from close range (Gillingham FC match report).

Gillingham had already threatened before the goal. In the fourth minute, Ronan Hale won the ball high up the pitch and drove a shot towards the bottom-left corner that Millwall goalkeeper Lukas Jensen saved well. The rebound fell to Goodwin, but Jensen recovered to block the second attempt.

Millwall's best first-half chances fell to Josh Coburn and Mathis Servais. Coburn worked space inside the box in the 34th minute but his left-footed effort lacked power, and MacLorg gathered comfortably. Servais went closer on the stroke of half-time, advancing into the box unchallenged before curling towards the far corner, but MacLorg got a strong hand to the ball to preserve the lead.

Gillingham made three changes at the break — Sam Gale, Louie Dayal and Seb Palmer-Houlden replacing Kadeem Harris, Hale and Goodwin. Millwall changed their entire outfield, keeping only Jensen on the pitch.

Palmer-Houlden nearly doubled the lead in the 54th minute. He closed down Jensen's attempted clearance, blocking the ball which drifted just wide of the target. Gillingham introduced seven more substitutes on the hour mark, including Nelson Khumbeni, Harry Waldock and Sully Booth.

A late sliding clearance from Gale denied Mark Sykes what would have been a certain equaliser in the dying minutes, and MacLorg pushed away Sheldon Kendall's low drive in the 87th minute. Goodwin's 17th-minute strike was the decisive moment, but the game's pattern was set before it. Gillingham's high press forced Jensen into that early double save, signalling that the League Two side would not sit back against a Millwall team that had reached the Championship play-offs the previous season. Once ahead, Ainsworth's side showed defensive discipline, with the back three of Andy Smith, Omar Beckles and Liam Gordon limiting Millwall to speculative efforts.

Will Goodwin (Gillingham) — Scored the only goal with a composed close-range finish and led the line effectively. His flick-on started the move he finished. Substituted at half-time as a planned measure.

Lennon MacLorg (Gillingham) — Made three important saves, including a fine stop from Servais just before the break. Replaced in the 88th minute after taking a knock.

Sam Gale (Gillingham) — Introduced at half-time, produced the game-saving sliding clearance to deny Sykes late on.

Lukas Jensen (Millwall) — Kept the scoreline respectable with a first-half double save and alert goalkeeping throughout, the only Millwall player to play the full 90 minutes.

The single goal reflected a tight pre-season friendly in which both sides prioritised fitness. Gillingham made 11 substitutions to Millwall's 10, including eight changes for the hosts on the hour mark. The attendance of 3,650 (1,800 away) was a healthy turnout for a midweek July friendly, boosted by the local derby element and a pre-match tribute to former Gillingham director of football Kenny Jackett, who died earlier this year (KentOnline).

The H2H record shows Millwall had won four of the previous eight meetings and were unbeaten in the last seven. This result breaks that run — Gillingham's only previous win in the fixture came in 2015, making this their first victory over Millwall in 11 years.

For Gillingham, this is a confidence-building result against a side that fell just short of the Premier League last season. Manager Gareth Ainsworth said: "There were some really positive signs from a lot of people. I thought that the work rate from all the boys, the ones who started the game and the ones who finished the game, was really good" (Gillingham FC). He added: "Millwall probably were at 70%. You have got to respect that team that nearly got to the Premier League last year."

Gillingham's pre-season continues with a trip to Chatham Town on Friday 24 July, followed by a behind-closed-doors fixture against Brentford B on Saturday 25 July. The League Two season begins in early August.
