Eintracht Braunschweig vs Southampton

Southampton flew out to Lower Saxony on matchday to begin a week-long training camp in Germany, sporting their new retro-inspired ivory third kit for the first time — a design inspired by the city's historic Bargate. Eckert's decision to field a completely different XI for the second half — a standard pre-season rotation — disrupted any rhythm either side could build. Braunschweig remained unchanged but could not find an equaliser. The German side's best second-half chance came when substitute goalkeeper George Long was called into action, but the match settled into a controlled pre-season tempo.

Damion Downs (Southampton) — The match-winner with a composed 35th-minute finish. His movement off the left flank troubled Braunschweig throughout the first half, and he showed improved confidence after the goal, testing Hofmann again before being withdrawn at half-time.

Lewis Dobbin (Southampton) — After scoring on his debut against Eastleigh, the summer signing added an assist, threading the pass that sent Downs clear. His link-up play with the front line was sharp.

Max Marie (Braunschweig) — The Braunschweig midfielder came closest to equalising for the hosts, striking the crossbar with a fierce drive late in the first half. He was a constant threat from midfield.

Romeo Akachukwu (Southampton) — Introduced in the second half, the young Irishman forced a good save from Hofmann with a curling effort and looked bright in the final third.

Southampton's 1-0 scoreline undersells their control of the game. The Saints created the clearer chances across both halves, with Downs' goal the standout moment of quality. Braunschweig's best spell came in the final 10 minutes of the first half, when Marie hit the bar and Ehlers directed a header off target, but they rarely threatened after the restart. The two entirely different XIs fielded by Eckert meant the second half lacked fluidity, but Saints' depth was evident: the second-half unit of Long, Bree, Wood, Quarshie, Manning, Charles, Matsuki, Fellows, Archer, Akachukwu and Oyekunle maintained control without conceding clear chances.

Southampton made it two wins from two pre-season friendlies, following their 3-1 victory over Eastleigh on 19 July. The result marks a solid start to their German training camp, with further friendlies scheduled before the competitive season begins. For Braunschweig, preparing for the 2. Bundesliga campaign, this was a useful test against Premier League opposition. The 5,803 attendance reflected solid interest in a pre-season fixture.

A professional, controlled pre-season performance from Southampton. Downs' clinical finish was the difference, and Eckert will be pleased with the fitness minutes spread across 22 players. Braunschweig offered moments of threat but lacked the cutting edge to trouble a well-organised Saints defence.
