Salford took the lead after 10 minutes when Macaulay Langstaff finished confidently inside the box, the forward showing his poacher's instinct to give the Ammies an early advantage against a United side that had started brightly.

Lorenzo Sassetti twice threatened during an encouraging opening spell to the second half, forcing a save at the near post before winning a corner. Ross Graham then came within inches of reducing the deficit, only to see his header cleared off the goal line.

United's pressure was rewarded on 65 minutes when Idjesse Metsoko collected possession on the edge of the area following good work from Dario Naamo and fired an excellent finish beyond Norris to halve the deficit.

Just as United had momentum, Salford restored their two-goal advantage seven minutes from time. Josh Austerfield — a 17-year-old substitute — scored to make it 3-1, a goal that proved decisive when Jamie Forrest pulled one back for United in the 89th minute.

The Terrors responded once more in the closing stages. Substitute Charlie Dewar produced an excellent driving run on the right flank before picking out fellow substitute Jamie Forrest, who calmly applied the finish to reduce the deficit and round off an encouraging attacking move. But Salford held on for the win.

For Dundee United, this was the final pre-season friendly before the competitive action begins. Jim Goodwin's side now turn their full attention to the William Hill Premiership curtain-raiser at home to Rangers on Friday 31 July. The defeat ends a pre-season campaign that included behind-closed-doors friendlies and Premier Sports Cup group stage matches.

For Salford City, the win continues their build-up to the 2026/27 EFL League Two season, which begins on 15 August 2026. The Ammies — who suffered play-off heartbreak last season — will look to carry this positive result into the final weeks of pre-season.
