Monaco vs Cercle Brugge

Cercle Brugge struck first inside 14 minutes. Forward Steve Ngoura collected the ball at the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký with no chance.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 31st minute through Valy Konaté — one of two Monaco loanees in the Cercle squad — whose angled shot kissed the inside of the post before crossing the line.

Monaco pulled one back before the end of the second quarter (43'). Jordan Teze, introduced at the start of the period, delivered a pinpoint ball behind the defence for Mika Biereth, who squared across goal for Aleksandr Golovin to fire home under the bar. It was Golovin's second goal of pre-season, following his free kick against Saint-Priest on 18 July.

The equaliser arrived in the 89th minute. Anis Soubeir supplied a superb pass from the left side of the box, and Paris Brunner cut inside onto his right foot, beating the goalkeeper at his near post to make it 2-2. It was Brunner's third goal in two pre-season appearances.

Monaco pushed for a winner in the final quarter. Oumar Konaté struck the post in the 70th minute, saw a header come back off the crossbar in the 76th, and hit the woodwork again in the 111th minute — a personal hat-trick of near-misses.

Filipe Luís's double substitution at the start of the fourth quarter proved decisive. Introducing Jules Stawiecki and Samuel Nibombé injected fresh energy, and Monaco's increased tempo overwhelmed a Cercle side that had defended resolutely through the third period. Brunner's equaliser arrived within two minutes of the restart.

Paris Brunner (Monaco) — The German forward scored his third goal in two pre-season appearances, continuing a rich vein of form. He was unlucky not to add a second, seeing a 66th-minute effort just elude him and an 81st-minute shot saved. Player of the match.

Oumar Konaté (Monaco) — Introduced in the third quarter, the Ivorian was a constant threat. He hit the woodwork three times across the final two periods and won a penalty shout that went unheard.

Aleksandr Golovin (Monaco) — The Russian international sparked the fightback with a well-taken close-range finish and earned a yellow card for cynically stopping a counter-attack — a sign of competitive edge in a friendly.

Steve Ngoura (Cercle Brugge) — The 21-year-old French striker, formed at Le Havre, opened the scoring with a fine strike and was a persistent threat in the first half.

The 4x30-minute format gave both managers the freedom to field two completely different XIs. Monaco's first-half lineup featured senior figures like Hrádecký, Kehrer, Vanderson and Golovin, while the second-half XI was a mix of youth and new arrivals — including summer signing Eric Dier captaining the side for the final two periods. Monaco's 18 total shots, with several striking the woodwork, reflect a dominant second half rather than a balanced contest. The fact that Cercle's two goals came from their only clear chances of the first hour tells its own story.

Monaco's pre-season record now stands at one win (5-2 vs Saint-Priest, 18 July), one loss (0-2 vs Sporting CP, 25 July) and one draw. The fightback from 2-0 down will please Filipe Luís more than the result itself, with the squad showing resilience after last week's defeat in Lisbon. New signing Matthis Abline was not involved, having only joined from Nantes on 30 July.

Cercle Brugge, managed by Lars Friis, were minutes from a morale-boosting win but will rue their inability to hold the lead. The Belgian side remain winless in pre-season (D1 L2) ahead of their Jupiler Pro League opener at Standard Liège on 8 August.

Monaco's next friendly is against Getafe at Stade Louis-II on Thursday 6 August (20:00 local).

A pre-season friendly that delivered exactly what it was designed to: minutes, fitness and answers. Monaco's first-half defensive fragility will concern Filipe Luís, but the second-half response — led by Brunner's excellent form and the lively Konaté — offered genuine encouragement. The comeback was built on depth, not luck.
