The USA struck first through a well-worked move in the 22nd minute. Midfielder Taylor Morrell advanced into space and played to full-back Georgia Restovich on the right flank. Hanashiro reacted first, poking the ball past Morrell and firing into the bottom-right corner beyond Ta's reach.

The freak equaliser — Ta's save deflecting off Williams — visibly shook the visitors' composure. Fuki Ito (Japan) — Her relentless running forced the second goal. Ito chased down a long ball, drove at the USA back line and created the chaos that led to Hanashiro's finish.

Lola Ta (USA) — The goalkeeper made several sharp saves in the first half to keep Japan at bay and finished with 10 saves overall, but will be disappointed with the ricochet that led to the own goal.

Gianna Hanf (USA) — Scored a composed opener on her first international start, showing sharp movement and a calm finish at the far post.

The shot statistics tell the story of a game that swung decisively in the second half. Japan registered 16 shots to the USA's three, and 11 on target to three. The USA's 10 saves — compared to Japan's two — reflect the relentless pressure Japan applied after the break, not a backs-to-the-wall defensive display in the first half.

Japan's 11 corner kicks to the USA's zero underscore their territorial dominance. The USA managed just three shots across the entire 90 minutes, with all three coming on target — efficiency in front of goal, but a lack of sustained attacking threat.

Japan completed a two-match sweep of this camp series, having won the first match 5-3 on 3 July. The USA's second match since qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup — they won all three Concacaf qualifiers in Costa Rica last March by a combined 32-0 — ends with back-to-back defeats.

Both teams now turn their attention to the World Cup in Morocco (17 October – 8 November). The USA will face Samoa, an African qualifier and China PR in the group stage. Japan's group stage opponents are yet to be confirmed.

Japan's second-half response was emphatic and deserved. After a flat first half, they overwhelmed the USA with sustained pressure, relentless movement and a clinical edge in the box. The USA will take heart from their first-half defensive organisation and Hanf's composed finish, but the gap in ball retention and chance creation against a technically superior Japanese side is a clear area for work before Morocco.
