Vikingur Reykjavik vs Gyori ETO FC

Vikingur, managed by Sölvi Ottesen, began aggressively on the artificial surface at Víkingsvöllur. Gylfi Sigurðsson — the former Tottenham and Swansea midfielder — tested Petráš with a sharp-angle shot inside the first two minutes. The warning set the tone for a one-sided first half.

Petráš kept Gyori in the contest with a succession of saves — blocking a low drive from Aron Þrándarson with his foot in the 57th minute, then tipping over another dangerous effort as Vikingur's pressure mounted.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the second minute of stoppage time. A Vikingur attack from the right flank produced a cross that found Óskar Borgþórsson unmarked at the far post. His header was brilliantly saved by Petráš, but Hansen read the rebound fastest, launching himself forward to head the loose ball into the net from close range. Csinger, attempting to clear, inadvertently caught Hansen in the face.

Nikolaj Hansen (Vikingur) — The substitute delivered the decisive moment, showing relentless hunger to follow up Borgþórsson's saved header. His goal could prove crucial in the tie.

Samuel Petráš (Gyori ETO) — The Slovak goalkeeper was the visitors' standout performer. He made several vital saves, particularly in the second half, and could do little about the goal — a reflex stop from the initial header was outstanding, but the rebound was impossible to recover.

Gylfi Sigurðsson (Vikingur) — The 36-year-old playmaker pulled the strings in midfield, dictating the tempo and creating several openings with his range of passing.

Vikingur's dominance in chances created — hitting the woodwork through Ingimundarson, forcing multiple saves from Petráš, and registering over a dozen attempts — reflects the gulf in match sharpness between the two sides. The Icelandic season is 14 rounds deep, with Vikingur sitting top of the Besta deild unblemished, while Gyori are still in pre-season, with the Hungarian NB I not starting until late July. The 1-0 scoreline flatters the visitors, who rarely threatened Ögmundur Kristinsson's goal.

The booking of Vikingur captain Oliver Ekroth (76') for a tactical foul on a rare Gyori counter-attack was the only card for the home side, while Gyori's Miodrag Krpić (88') and Márk Csinger (90+3') were both cautioned for frustrated fouls in the closing stages.

Vikingur take a slender 1-0 advantage into the second leg at the Győri ETO Park on Tuesday, 14 July. The aggregate winner will face Israeli side Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the second qualifying round. The loser drops into the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round.

For Gyori, the deficit is minimal — a single goal at home next week would take the tie to extra time. But Juárez will need to solve his team's attacking issues, especially with top scorer Nadhir Benbouali — who scored at the 2026 World Cup for Algeria — missing through injury sustained at the tournament. The return of Benbouali for the second leg has not been confirmed.

Vikingur were the sharper, more dangerous side and deserved their win. The margin should have been wider, but Petráš's heroics kept Gyori alive. The tie is far from over — a 1-0 lead is vulnerable, and Gyori will feel the return leg at home offers a genuine chance to reset. But Juárez's side will need far more attacking thrust than they showed in Reykjavik.
