Verdes vs CD Motagua

Motagua needed only seven minutes to take control. Luis Vega converted a penalty after Deshawn Nembhard was adjudged to have fouled Jorge Serrano in the box, sending goalkeeper Woodrow West the wrong way from the spot.

The Honduran side dominated possession through the first half but could not add a second before the break, with Denis Meléndez blazing over from a short corner routine and Alejandro Reyes firing wide from distance. Reyes and Meléndez both went into the book — Reyes for a foul in the 18th minute, Meléndez for a late challenge in the 44th.

The floodgates opened after the restart. Meléndez made amends for his first-half miss in the 49th minute, controlling a long ball over the Verdes backline and finishing from the centre of the box. Substitute Jonathan Moya made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute with a towering header from an Alejandro Reyes cross.

Moya completed his brace in spectacular fashion in the 75th minute, meeting a flick-on from a corner with an acrobatic volley that drew gasps from the home crowd. Jordan García rounded off the scoring in second-half stoppage time (90'+2), turning home a cutback from Jorge Serrano after a surging run down the right flank.

The second goal — Meléndez's strike three minutes into the second half — killed any hope of a Verdes response. The hosts had held firm after the early penalty and reached half-time at 1-0, but the quick concession after the interval exposed the gulf in quality. Motagua scored a further three goals in the 25 minutes that followed, turning a manageable deficit into a rout.

Jonathan Moya — Introduced in the 54th minute, the Costa Rican striker scored twice inside 21 minutes of game time. His first was a textbook near-post header; his second a breathtaking bicycle kick. He became only the second Motagua player in club history to score two or more goals as a substitute in a single CONCACAF Central American Cup match.

Alejandro Reyes — The midfielder orchestrated the demolition from the right flank, providing two assists — the cross for Moya's opener and the delivery for Meléndez's goal — despite picking up an early yellow card. He became only the third Honduran player to register two or more assists in a single Central American Cup match.

Luis Vega — Opened the scoring from the penalty spot and turned provider for Moya's second goal with a well-delivered corner.

The raw scoreline tells only part of the story. Motagua registered 43 touches in the opposition box — their highest in a single Central American Cup match since the 2025 edition — and restricted Verdes to zero shots on target across the entire 90 minutes. That is only the second time a team has held an opponent without a shot on target in the competition since 2025, following Plaza Amador's feat against Real España in the 2025 quarter-finals.

Motagua sit top of Group D after the opening matchday with three points and a goal difference of +5. The Honduran side travel to face CD FAS next Thursday. Verdes, who have now lost both Central American Cup meetings against Motagua by an aggregate score of 10-0, host CSD Municipal on the same day in a must-improve fixture if they are to stay in contention for the knockout rounds.

For a Motagua side that had fallen in the play-in round in two of the previous three editions of the competition, this performance signals a confident start. For Verdes, the defensive frailties that plagued them in the 2023 meeting (a 5-0 loss to the same opponent) have resurfaced.

Motagua were clinical, structured and relentless; Verdes were outclassed in every department. The Honduran side's depth — exemplified by a substitute scoring a brace — suggests they have the squad to progress deep into the tournament. Verdes face a long road back if they cannot address a defence that has now conceded ten goals across two meetings with Motagua.
