Whatever Nairn County manager Les Fridge planned at half-time was undone in a devastating 120-second spell. A player listed only as Trialist A scored twice in quick succession — first in the 49th minute, then again in the 51st — to make it 4-0 before the hour mark.

Connall Ewan added a fifth on 64 minutes, and Lewis Hyde completed the scoring in the 79th minute. The provider payload recorded zero cards in the match.

Virtanen's goal in the 41st minute was the killer blow. The 6-0 scoreline speaks to a gulf in class between Scottish League Two (tier 4) and the Highland League (tier 5). This was a pre-season friendly for both sides, with no competitive points at stake. Elgin City — who finished 6th in Scottish League Two in 2025/26 per their official club records — continue their build-up with a friendly against Raith Rovers on 11 July. Nairn County host Nairn St Ninian on 4 July before beginning their Highland League campaign against Rothes on 25 July.

Elgin City's superiority was evident from the first whistle. The gap between Scotland's fourth tier and the Highland League was laid bare as the visitors ran out convincing winners without needing to shift through the gears. For Nairn County, sterner tests await once the league season starts, but this was a reminder of the step up required.
