Ferencváros 1-0 Qarabag: Yusuf header settles pre-season friendly in Kufstein

Ferencvárosi TC closed out their Austrian training camp with a 1-0 victory over Qarabag FK at the Kufstein Arena on Wednesday, Bamidele Yusuf's 29th-minute header proving the difference in a physical, rain-soaked friendly.

Balázs Borbély's side, who drew 1-1 with Sabah three days earlier (28 June), showed greater cohesion in the second half of their Austrian camp (23 June – 2 July) and won the second of their two pre-season tests against Azerbaijani opposition.

How it unfolded

The match kicked off in soggy, almost autumnal conditions in Kufstein. Qarabag started brightly: inside three minutes, Ferencváros goalkeeper Dénes Dibusz had to rush off his line to clear a cross. In the 15th minute, Krisztián Lisztes lost possession in a dangerous area, and Montiel's deflected shot forced a corner that came to nothing.

Ferencváros grew into the half. Cadu and Matías Gómez made important blocks inside their own box, while at the other end, Qarabag goalkeeper Kochalski saved from Edgar Sevikyan and then produced a spectacular stop from Cadu's deflected effort. Yusuf had a golden chance in a 2-on-1 break but delayed his shot and was blocked.

He made no mistake in the 29th minute. After Cadu and Lisztes applied pressure high up the pitch, a cross came in from the left flank. Yusuf timed his run perfectly, met the ball with a firm header, and powered it past Kochalski to make it 1-0.

Sevikyan headed over from a similar move in the 37th minute, and the score remained 1-0 at half-time.

The turning point

Borbély made a half-time change — Ádám Varga replaced Dibusz in goal, with Naby Keïta taking the captain's armband — but the decisive moment had already come. Yusuf's header gave Ferencváros a lead they never looked like relinquishing, even as Borbély emptied his bench with 11 substitutions across the 90 minutes.

Qarabag's best chance arrived in the 71st minute when Zakaria shot just wide from close range. But Ferencváros held firm, and a flurry of six substitutions in the 76th minute — including the introduction of Daniel Arzani, Zsombor Gruber and Callum O'Dowda — saw the game out without further alarm.

Key performers

Bamidele Yusuf (Ferencváros) — The Nigerian striker scored the only goal with a well-timed near-post header. He was a persistent threat, winning the ball high up the pitch and linking play in the 2-on-1 break that preceded his goal. Player of the match.

Naby Keïta (Ferencváros) — The former Liverpool midfielder anchored the midfield in the first hour before being substituted. He wore the captain's armband in the second half after Dibusz was replaced.

Cadu (Ferencváros) — The Brazilian full-back was involved in the build-up to the goal, pressing high to force the turnover, and made several important defensive interventions.

By the numbers — interpreted

Ferencváros made 11 substitutions to Qarabag's zero, reflecting Borbély's desire to give minutes to as many squad members as possible on the final day of the Austrian camp. The 1-0 scoreline — the lowest-scoring of the five meetings between these sides since 2022 — was a departure from a fixture that had averaged 4.2 goals per game, with both teams scoring in all five previous encounters.

Qarabag, who beat WSG Tirol 4-0 on 27 June with Zakaria Sawo scoring a hat-trick, were kept largely quiet by a disciplined Ferencváros defensive block. The rain-soaked pitch in Kufstein made slick passing difficult for both sides.

What it means

Ferencváros finish their Austrian training camp (23 June – 2 July) with one win and one draw from two friendlies. Next week, the competitive action begins: they travel to Serbia to face FK Vojvodina in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round on Thursday 9 July 2026 (kick-off 20:00 local time at Stadion Karadjordje, Novi Sad). The return leg is at the Groupama Aréna in Budapest on 16 July 2026.

Qarabag continue their pre-season programme. The Azerbaijan champions will also enter European qualifying later this month.

What they said

"We played on a heavy, deep pitch against a tough opponent. The boys fought hard — I'm very satisfied with their mentality. It was a useful friendly because Qarabag played at an intensity in certain phases that we'll regularly face at international level. The first ten minutes weren't ours, but then we took control and imposed our will for about 30-35 minutes until half-time. We deservedly took the lead. In the second half, we improved in both attack and defence. There were still errors to correct before next week's cup match, but I'm pleased that we progressed in our play, not just the result."

Verdict

A professional, controlled pre-season workout from Ferencváros. The clean sheet against a Qarabag side that had scored freely a few days earlier is a positive sign, and Yusuf's sharpness in front of goal will encourage Borbély ahead of the Europa League qualifier against Vojvodina. The heavy rotation — 11 substitutions — means fitness was the priority, but the result itself is a useful confidence builder.
