FC Gutersloh vs Arminia Bielefeld

New head coach Oliver Kirch fielded a completely different XI in each half, a continuation of the rotation policy he used in Arminia's first friendly — a 7-3 win over Westfalenliga side SC Peckeloh on 28 June.

The first half was one-way traffic in terms of possession. Arminia controlled the game from the outset, with Jannik Rochelt's free kick (6') and Benjamin Boakye's shot after a turnover (15') the early chances. The most dangerous moment came through Marius Wörl, whose shot from Joel Grodowski's pass drifted narrowly wide (31'). Gütersloh, organised and disciplined, offered little in attack but forced their only real chance just before the break (38').

Kirch made a full XI change at half-time, and the new lineup took just six minutes to break the deadlock. Henri Koudossou delivered a cross from the right flank and Julian Kania — back at Arminia after a loan spell — headed in from close range (51').

Lukas Kunze doubled the lead in the 63rd minute, capitalising on a defensive miscommunication between Gütersloh's centre-backs after a back-pass error. The 22-year-old midfielder slotted calmly past the goalkeeper.

Roberts Uldriķis put the result beyond doubt in the 70th minute, scoring just two minutes after entering the pitch. The Latvian striker received the ball on the right side of the box and finished into the bottom-left corner.

The deadlock was broken within six minutes of the restart. FC Gütersloh's backline, which had held firm for 45 minutes, lost its organisation after the goal — and the second followed just 12 minutes later. Kirch's half-time reshuffle paid immediate dividends, and the two-goal cushion within 63 minutes removed any prospect of a Gütersloh response.

Julian Kania (Arminia Bielefeld) — The striker, who spent last season on loan, scored the opening goal with a well-placed header from Koudossou's cross. His movement and physical presence troubled the Gütersloh defence throughout the second half. Player of the Match.

Lukas Kunze (Arminia Bielefeld) — Composed finish for the second goal, showing sharp instincts to pounce on the defensive error. His midfield work rate gave Arminia control in the second half.

Roberts Uldriķis (Arminia Bielefeld) — Needed only two minutes to make an impact after coming on as a substitute. The Latvian's clinical finish into the bottom corner capped a polished second-half attacking display.

The 0-0 half-time scoreline undersells Arminia's first-half dominance: they controlled possession and created several half-chances but lacked a cutting edge in the final third. The second-half substitutions changed the dynamic entirely. The three goals came from distinctly different patterns — a wide cross (Kania), a defensive error punished (Kunze), and a structured build-up through the right channel (Uldriķis) — suggesting Kirch's tactical variety is beginning to take shape.

Arminia have now won both pre-season friendlies under Kirch with a combined 10-3 aggregate. The team heads into a training camp next, where Kirch said the squad will "increase intensity and work on details with and against the ball." Eyüp Yasar and Marvin Mehlem missed the match through minor knocks.

For FC Gütersloh, it was a second defeat in two pre-season games after a 1-0 loss to SC Spelle-Venhaus. Head coach Julian Hesse acknowledged the positives of the first half but was frustrated after the break: "The hunger and organisation in defence was missing. We gave away two goals. That annoys me — discipline is important to us." Captain Björn Rother made his return after nine months out with an Achilles tendon rupture, playing 30 minutes. Trialist Gijs Steinfelder, a 23-year-old unattached Dutch forward, featured for an hour.

A routine and professional pre-season win for Arminia, dictated by a controlled first half and a ruthless second-half spell. For Kirch, the rotation is yielding useful data across two entirely different lineups. Gütersloh can take heart from a disciplined first-half performance against a side two divisions above them, but the defensive lapses after the break are a concern with Schalke visiting on Saturday.
