Stockton Town vs Darlington 1883

Darlington took the lead inside eight minutes. Dylan Stephenson forced a sharp save from the Stockton goalkeeper, and from the resulting corner, Tom Platt nodded the ball down at the far post for Mark Beck to turn home from close range.

Quakers nearly regained the lead just before the interval when Tom Platt went close from a corner, but the score remained 1-1 at the break.

Beck's second goal in the 52nd minute, just three minutes after Stockton had their best chance of the second half through Pinnegar, shifted momentum decisively. It was a classic target-man header that Stockton's defence simply could not handle, and it gave Darlington the platform to control the game.

Darlington's two distinct systems — a back three in the first half and a back four after the break — reflect Watson's pre-season experimentation. The second-half dominance (both of Darlington's second-half goals arrived after the shape change) suggests the Quakers are growing into games as they build fitness. Stockton had their moments but lacked the cutting edge to capitalise on a promising first-half spell.

For Darlington, this is a second consecutive pre-season win as they prepare for the 2026/27 campaign. Watson confirmed the squad is still in flux, with trialists featuring heavily and at least two more signings expected. Stockton, stepping up their own preparations in the NPL Premier Division, showed enough in the first hour to suggest they will be competitive this season. Darlington face a behind-closed-doors friendly against Premier League Newcastle United before a home fixture with Carlisle United on 21 July.

A thoroughly deserved win for Darlington, who grew into the game and showed their superiority in the second half. Beck's physical presence was the difference, and Stephenson's goal was a reminder of the attacking threat Watson is building. Stockton will take encouragement from their first-half performance but will need to be sharper in both boxes when the real business begins.
