Bircham was blunt: "The good bits about that is you let a goal in too early. The lads are learning quickly. You're not getting away with stuff. You make little mistakes, little switch-off, and boom, they're getting punished."

Wealdstone's failure to convert further chances in the first half ensured the game stayed alive, but Hemel could not find an equaliser despite improved second-half pressure. Waddock noted: "If we were more clinical and took the chances, it would have been a little bit more comfortable."

Trialist (Wealdstone) — The unnamed goalscorer may have done his chances of earning a contract no harm. "Trialist A and Trialist B combined really, really well," Waddock said.

Aaron Henry (Wealdstone) — The new signing showed flashes of quality in midfield, particularly from dead-ball situations. "He's technically very, very good," Waddock said. "The way he controls the middle of the park and his set plays — very, very good."

Charlie Rowan (Hemel Hempstead Town) — The Hemel captain marshalled the defence after the early setback and was a calming presence as the visitors grew into the game. "Each week I'm seeing a real improvement from the boys," he said.

Wealdstone's first-half superiority did not translate into a wider margin, while Hemel's second-half improvement suggests Bircham's side are building fitness against a schedule of full-time opponents — this was their fourth consecutive pre-season game against a side from a higher division.

For Wealdstone, this was a second pre-season run-out after a defeat to Championship side QPR earlier in the week. Waddock was pleased with the clean sheet: "Guys, they dug in. We wanted to keep a clean sheet. It's really, really important, and we done that today."

For Hemel, it was another valuable test against higher-level opposition as they build towards the 2026/27 National League South campaign. Bircham confirmed the side have six players on the treatment table and are still waiting on decisions from trialists. "We're going for the right players. They're all getting deals at full-time clubs. We can't compete with that."

Both sides are next in action on Tuesday 21 July — Wealdstone face Chelsea Town, while Hemel travel to Hendon.
