Both teams managed five goals between them with no cards recorded, typical of a pre-season friendly where competitive edge is tempered by fitness priorities. Braintree's first-half dominance — Pitt described it as "very possession-based" — yielded two goals from their first-half efforts. Aveley's three goals came from three second-half strikes, a conversion rate that reflects the disruption caused by Braintree's mass changes rather than sustained pressure.

This was the third of eight pre-season friendlies for Braintree Town under manager Steve Pitt, who returned to the club following their relegation from the National League. The Iron, now preparing for National League South life in 2026/27, have scored two goals in each of their three pre-season games so far. Their next fixture is a behind-closed-doors match against a full-strength Cambridge United on Monday 20 July, followed by a home fixture against Woking on Tuesday 21 July. Aveley, who play in the Isthmian League Premier Division (Step 3), continue their own pre-season build-up ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

A tale of two halves and two line-ups. Braintree's first XI looked sharp, purposeful and clearly drilled in Pitt's possession-based philosophy, but the depth of the squad remains a concern after a wholesale second-half change yielded two sloppy goals and a defeat. Aveley will take heart from the comeback, but both managers will know the scoreline matters less than the minutes banked.
