Matlock Town vs Rotherham

Matlock struck first inside the opening ten minutes. A defensive mix-up at the back handed possession to Abbey, who tapped into an empty net from close range to give the Northern Premier League East side a 1-0 lead after 8 minutes.

Rotherham controlled possession for much of the first half but struggled to carve out clear chances on a difficult playing surface. Head coach Alex Bruce made several changes at the break, introducing a trialist goalkeeper among them.

The equaliser arrived in the 52nd minute. A sweeping ball from Nemane in behind the Matlock defence found Trialist C, who was fouled inside the box. The same trialist stepped up to convert the penalty himself, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the scores.

That proved to be the final goal of the game, though Rotherham pushed for a winner. Trialist B hit the post from a tight angle, and James Clarke saw a deflected effort fly just over the bar, but Matlock's defence held firm.

Jed Abbey (Matlock Town) — The forward's sharp movement and composure to finish the early chance gave Matlock a lead they would hold for 44 minutes. His movement troubled the Rotherham backline throughout the first half.

Trialist C / Kyle Vassell (Rotherham United) — The 33-year-old free agent, returning to the club where he previously played between 2018 and 2020, won and converted the penalty to earn Rotherham a draw. Head coach Alex Bruce confirmed trialists are being evaluated carefully.

Tom Senior (Matlock Town) — Organised the home defence superbly, particularly in the second half when Rotherham turned up the pressure. Matlock conceded just the one goal despite facing a professional outfit.

Alex Bruce (Rotherham United head coach) — Speaking after the match, Bruce said: "I was pleased with a number of things. We missed a few chances, didn't we? And it's a bit of a silly mistake for the goal, but apart from that, the positives were there for everyone to see." On the pitch conditions, he added: "It's not conducive for slick football on here. That's an understatement. The pitch was poor, to say the least."

The 1-1 scoreline understates the gulf in league status (Rotherham in League Two, Matlock in the NPL East — tier 8). Rotherham had the majority of the ball and created the better chances after the break, with Matlock's goal coming from a defensive error rather than sustained pressure. The hosts' goal was their only shot on target in the first half, while Rotherham's equaliser arrived from the penalty spot — their most reliable route to goal against a stubborn low block.

For Matlock Town, this was their third pre-season friendly of the summer, following a 0-2 loss to Barnsley on 4 July. They continue their pre-season programme against Mickleover FC at home on Tuesday 21 July (19:45 BST), before facing Carlton Town away on 25 July. Their NPL East season begins on 8 August at home to Dunston.

Rotherham United, preparing for the 2026-27 League Two campaign, made it two draws in pre-season after a 1-1 at Emley on 14 July. Bruce's side are still building fitness, with several players carrying minor niggles being managed carefully. The Millers' next pre-season fixture is away at Alfreton Town, with the competitive season opener scheduled for early August.

A useful workout for both sides. Matlock will be encouraged by their defensive organisation against a team three divisions higher, while Rotherham's pre-season is still in its early stages — the trialist-heavy lineup and Bruce's cautious approach to injuries suggest there is more to come as the squad takes shape ahead of the League Two campaign.
